Some years ago, when the Texas Hold Em craze was at its peak, I wrote a poker column and played in several televised tournaments. In one, despite being supernaturally useless, I blundered into the chip lead with two players remaining.
Nigel Farage blundered into national life with the fathead grin and the silly boating jackets, and didn’t we scoff? Twenty years later, we look up and see he’s nicked our country from under our noses.
For Donald Trump, who is gaining on Hillary Clinton in the polls, security fears offer an opening – and this week he showed that he has the capacity to exploit it. America has never recaptured its self confidence. It has blundered into too many wars. A man who projects ego dashed with pragmatism is an attractive prospect.
