Richtig?

She would not have killed him, if she was not insane.

Ist das richtig?

To start with: The comma before "if" is wrong.

At least in AE, we would typically say "if she were not" -- but I know that some here dispute that usage.

were

is also correct in BE

Since this is past tense, I'd say, "... if she hadn't been/gone insane."

as another option.

Wollte ich auch erst sagen, aber im OP steht wäre geisteskrank, nicht wäre geisteskrank gewesen. Deshalb ist were schon richtig.

"temporary insanity" has long been an accepted and valid defense in (US) court(s), especially in murder cases, so I don't see anything wrong with my suggestion. Very few people are continually insane from the day they were born until they die. But as usual, context is everything.

It may very well be that, for the OP sentence, "were" is better than "was." But I am not certain about it. Compare it with this:

"If she was sane, she would not have killed him."

IMO, that has the same meaning as "She would not have killed him if she was not insane."

I think that either "was" or "were" could be appropriate here. It depends on the intended meaning.

She wouldn't have killed him had she not been insane, to throw another option into the ring.

re#8: although I agree with you, Gibson sez "no!"
