Toxicodendron radicans, commonly called poison ivy, is the ultimate weed that no one wants. “Leaflets three, let it be.” […] All parts of the plant contain a toxic plant oil called urushiol which can cause significant and long-lasting skin irritations (allergic dermatitis) in most human beings. Infection can occur from direct contact with the plant, indirect contact (e.g., dog, rake or shoes) or from breathing smoke from a fire of plant material. Some humans seem to be immune.

Im Westen von Graz ist eine gefährliche Pflanzenart auf einem Privatgrundstück aufgetaucht. Schon bei leichter Berührung des sogenannten Giftsumach kann es zu starken allergischen Hautreaktionen kommen. Österreichweit handelt es sich um die erste Meldung. Die Pflanze, die bei zwei Kindern allergische Reaktionen ausgelöst hatte, soll in den kommenden Tagen ausgegraben und sicher entsorgt werden.
Sie stammt aus Nordamerika und sollte in Europa höchstens in botanischen Gärten zu finden sein: Der Giftsumach, auch “Poison Ivy” oder “Giftefeu” genannt, ist in der Wissenschaft als Toxicodendron radicans bekannt.
Giftsumach in Bayern
Die aus Nordamerika stammende Pflanze ist in Deutschland eigentlich nur in wenigen botanischen Gärten zu finden. Im Juni 2009 wurde im Stadtgebiet von Dachau ein Befall mit Giftsumach (Poison ivy) auf einer kommunalen Grünfläche festgestellt.

Einordnung
Der Giftsumach (Wiss.: Toxicodendron radicans (L.); Syn.: […], Rhus radicans) oder auch Gift-Efeu genannt, gehört innerhalb der Familie der Sumach-Gewächse (Anacardiaceae) zur Gattung Rhus.
Giftiger Efeu
Die Gift-Ivy-Pflanze, bekannt durch den botanischen Namen Rhus radicans, ist die bekannteste Rebe, die häufig allergische Kontaktdermatitis verursacht.
Noch gefährlicher sind die giftigen amerikanischen Arten, Rhus radicans und Rhus toxicodendron. Amerikaner kennen sie als «poison ivy» (Giftiger Efeu) und «poison oak» (Giftige Eiche). Berührungen können schwere Hautschäden und allergische Reaktionen auslösen.
