I also love growing Japanese shiso, sometimes known as Japanese beefsteak plant, for the rich umami-meets-mixed-herb flavour of its leaves. The purple form is a real stunner on any plate, with its tiny nettle-like leaves being a real talking point for the uninitiated.

Modern gardeners have tended towards cultivars, with their large flowers, but species clematis are easy to grow and have great variety, with the one common characteristic of small flowers.
There are plenty to choose from but two I grow that have particularly good fragrance are C. rehderiana, with primrose-yellow bells of flowers and curious, nettle-like leaves – though it’s not suited to a small garden as it can reach 30ft – and C. flammula, which has a star-like foam of white flowers.

Nicht alle Arten von Kontaktekzemen sind auf allergische Reaktionen zurückzuführen. Die Berührung mit einer Brennnessel etwa führt bei jedem Menschen zu einer direkten Hautreizung mit nesselartigem Ausschlag oder Ekzem.

Der Name „Zürgelbaum“ geht auf die Bezeichnung „Zürgeln“ für die Früchte zurück und ist der einzige deutsche Baumname, der in Südtirol entstanden ist und erstmals als „zurglpam“ im Jahre 1591 dokumentiert ist. Wegen der brennnesselähnlichen Blätter wird er auch Nesselbaum genannt.
