In the United States and Canada, it is commonly known as a tank top, tank shirt, muscle shirt, and also wifebeater, guinea tee, or dago tee("guinea" and "dago" being American ethnic slurs for people of Italian ethnicity). The term wifebeater reportedly became synonymous for an undershirt after a criminal case in 1947. A Detroit native named James Hartford Jr. was arrested for beating his wife to death. News outlets printed a photo of Hartford in a stained undershirt and referred to him as "the wife beater."
form fitting white ribbed tank top worn by men; looks good on well-built fellas, pathetic on skinny fellas, and disgusting on fat beer bellied fellas
Why Do We Call It A “Wife Beater” Shirt?
How did a violent term become a piece of clothing?
We’re in a bubbling cauldron of gender issues, and they’re boiling to the surface. To contribute to this heated discussion, we think there’s no better time to take wife beater, the slang term for that ubiquitous sleeveless white shirt, to the dump for good.
wife beater [sl.] – ärmelloses Hemd
wife beater [sl.] – Muskelshirt
wife beater [sl.] – Unterhemd
wife beater (sleeveless shirt) (am., ugs.) – [geripptes] Muskelshirt
wife beater (sleeveless shirt) (am., ugs.) – [cooles, geripptes] Unterhemd
Im Duden finden wir unter Tanktop:
- ärmelloses, westenähnliches Anzughemd
- ärmelloses T-Shirt
Wobei mein Vorschlag auf der deutschen Seite noch verbesserungswürdig ist :-)
