Subfamilies of the swifts (Apodiformes: Apodidae): Schoutedenapus revisited
... Brooke (1970) also recognized three tribes, Collocaliini, Chaeturini and Apodini, within a single subfamily Apodinae. He felt that there was no character other than the foot structure outlined by Sclater (1865) to define further subfamilies and that the finding of DeRoo (1968) blurred even this as a distinctive character. What DeRoo (1968) had found was that the Scarce Swift Schoutedenapus myoptilus, long included as Apus myoptilus within Sclater’s Apodinae, in fact has an anisodactyl foot with the unreduced number of phalanges typical of the C haeturinae. He erected a new genus Schoutedenapus to include both myoptilus and an additional species S. schoutedeni described by Prigogine (1960). ...

SWIFTs
Order Apodiformes Family Apodidae
The swifts are a family, Apodidae, of highly aerial birds. They are superficially similar to swallows, but are actually not closely related to passerine species at all. Swifts are in the separate order Apodiformes, which they share with hummingbirds. The treeswifts are closely related to the true swifts, but form a separate family, the Hemiprocnidae. Swifts use their short legs only for clinging onto vertical surfaces or wires, and never land on the ground voluntarily.Because of this, and also because they usually fly fast and sledom alight, they are difficult to photograph. Often the best way to identify a swift is by where it is found. ...
