Burchell’s Sandgrouse Appearance
Burchell's sandgrouse have light brown to rufous plumage, that is mottled with dark brown and white spots. Males have a grey throat and cheeks, whilst females have a yellow throat and cheeks. The eye is surrounded by a bare yellow patch of skin. The eye and bill are both dark in colour.
... Burchell’s Sandgrouse Behaviour
As with all sandgrouse, they will carry water to their chicks by means of their belly feathers. As the chicks cannot fly, the parents need to supply the chicks with moisture. After soaking their chest and belly feathers in water, the male will fly to the nest and chicks to enable the chicks to drink. This is also done by the female, but to a lesser extent, due to the female not have the same amount of absorbent feathers as the male.
Burchell's sandgrouse time their drinking with sunrise throughout the year, they arrive at a water hole to drink and collect water, around 2 hours after sunrise. Burchell’s sandgrouse form flocks to drink. ...

His name is commemorated in the scientific name given to the wild pomegranate, Burchellia bubaline. His name is associated with the Burchell’s zebra, Equus quagga burchellii, while ornithologists associate him with no fewer than five birds, including the Burchell’s sandgrouse, Pterocles burchelli. Other creatures bearing his name include the Burchell’s sand lizard, Pedioplanis burchelli, and an endangered freshwater fish, Burchell’s redfin, Pseudobarbarus burchelli. ...

Burchell's sandgrouse (Pterocles burchelli) is a species of bird in the family Pteroclidae. It is found in arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa. The name of this bird commemorates the English naturalist William John Burchell.[2]
Description
Burchell's sandgrouse is a plump bird about the size of a pigeon with a small head and short legs. The body is light brown, mottled with darker shades and white speckles. In males, the eye is surrounded by bare yellow skin and the cheeks and throat are pale grey. The male grows to about 25 cm (10 in) long and the female is a little smaller.[3]
Distribution and habitat
Burchell's sandgrouse is found in Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. It is normally resident but moves about to a limited extent depending on the availability of water and the seeds it mainly eats. It is widespread and common in much of its range.[4] It frequents areas of rough grass and scrub, especially on red Kalahari sand and has been able to extend its range because of the greater availability of water after the sinking of boreholes by farmers.[5] ...
