The Columbiformes order contains just one family, the Columbidae which is comprised of dove and pigeon species. They have small heads, short legs, and four unwebbed toes. All Columbiformes are monogamous. Unlike most other birds they are capable of drinking by sucking up water, without needing to tilt the head back.

Cats are present in some rock islands, Babeldaob, Carp island, and presumably Peleliu (G. McKinlay in litt. 2018). Rats are abundant in some parts of the species's range (G. McKinlay in litt. 2018). The Palau Conservation Society reported observing a ground dove being killed by a rat in 2005 (A. Gupta in litt. 2011). Forest has been cleared for the construction of roads, houses and farms (VanderWerf 2007, Ketebengang and Gupta 2011). An analysis of remote-sensed forest cover data found that between 2000 and 2012, forest was lost from the species's range at a rate equivalent to 4.3% across three generations (Tracewski et al. 2016). Vegetation has been cleared and human disturbance has increased at Ulong Island, where the species was formerly reliably observed (G. McKinlay in litt. 2018). ....

The Palau ground dove (Pampusana canifrons) is a species of bird in the family Columbidae.[2] It is endemic to Palau, living in forests. The IUCN has assessed it as an endangered species.

    Taxonomy

Hartlaub and Finsch described this species as Phlegoenas canifrons from Palau in 1872. The species is monotypic.[3] Formerly placed in the genus Gallicolumba, it was moved to Alopecoenas.[1] The name of the genus was changed in 2019 to Pampusana Bonaparte, 1855 as this name has priority.[4][5]

    Description

This dove is about 21 cm (8.3 in) long. The forehead and lores are ashy grey, and the crown is dark slaty. The nape and upper mantle are chestnut. The lower mantle is olive and has bronze reflections. The flight feathers are dark brown and rufous, and there is a purple patch on the wing coverts. The throat is pearly grey, and the breast is ashy grey. The abdomen is blackish brown. The upper tail has green and blackish feathers, and the under tail is blackish. The eyes are dark brown, the beak is blackish, and the legs are red. The juvenile bird has a duller forehead and throat, and it does not have the purple patch on the wing coverts.[6] ...
