Unofficially, in confidence, not for publication, as in What he was about to say, he told the reporters, was strictly off the record. Ich kann mir vorstellen, da"s in einen privaten Gespr"ach "off the record" verwendet wird, und in der "Ubersetzung "unter uns" besser pa"st als die anderen Leo-Eintr"age. Bei der Gegenrichtung bin ich mir nicht sicher.

I'm struggling to come up with examples where "off the record" is used in the meaning "unter uns gesagt". It is a possible translation but I'd say the cases are few and far between and then only with "but" at the beginning. I'm undecided about whether to include it.

@Doris: Es wäre auch verwunderlich, wenn man viele schriftliche Belegstellen für Sätze finden würde, die mit " But [let me tell you this] off the record ..." beginnen ... jedenfalls wäre es nicht im Sinne dessen, der da zitiert wird ;o)
In der gesprochenen Sprache dürfte es weitaus häufiger sein, nehme ich an.
Mir ist diese Wendung jedenfalls aus Gesprächen mit AE natives bekannt. Wenn mir z.B. ein Vertreter einer Softwarefirma in der Pause zwischen zwei Vorträgen eines Kongresses sagt: "But off the records, we're aware of this bug and we're already working on it.", dann würde ich das schon als "Unter uns gesagt, wir wissen, daß es da einen Fehler gibt ...." übersetzen.

@Markus <de>: ich muß dir recht geben, eigentlich hatte ich den Aspekt der Verwendung von "but off the record" insb. in der gesprochenen Sprache am Anfang meines Resümees auch noch im Kopf, aber bis ich dann mit Google durch war, hatte ich den Gedanken wieder vergessen.
