"Cultivated" might be OK here. Do you mean that they worked hard to develop these habits? Then "cultivate" is fine.

Otherwise, perhaps just "developed numerous habits".

I would not write "helped them to distance from mainstream". A better phrase might be:

...which helped them separate themselves from the mainstream.

I think "develop" fits better... and especially thanks for correcting the rest of the phrase!
