    klingt oben genanntes besser als:

    ...allowed thinking on...

    think ABOUT
think ON is often said, but is regional (and archaic)
    sounds odd

To "think on" could also mean weiter zu denken.

To think about s.th. is nachdenken. You could also use to "reflect on" s.th.

Die rapid development of computers made it possible to think about applications quite early.

    How does that sound?

From the limited context, it seems that you are trying to say that thanks to the faster development of computers, it was possible to think of (better, to conceive of) something quite new, namely computer applications.

"To think of" means little more than to "have some thoughts about". In contrast, "to conceive of" suggests some original and remarkable thought about computers and what they can do.
