According to LEO, Spielzeuge is a 'real' word for toys. My son's German teacher (and seemingly the German Grundschule system - or at least the textbooks we have) insists that Spielzeug is a singular word only (toyS being Spielwaren or Spielsachen and not Spielzeuge).

Dear LEOs... in a language subject to 'regulation', there must be a right answer, surely?? ;-)

My son (English mother tongue) is doing his head in when there is conflicting opinion. Is there such a word as Spielzeuge or not???? If usage has changed, when did Spielzeug evolve from a 'non-word' to acceptable? In which legitimate dictionaries (if any) is it present?
