"The British Phonographic Industry effectively called time on the cassette single yesterday, when it disclosed that not one tape had been shifted in the first quarter of the year." http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2004/jun/03/2

Does "im Grunde genommen" hit the English exactly? It means that something may not actually have happened, but the effect is the same as if it had. So if Mary "effectively told John their relationship was over", she didn't actually say that, she said something like "You are a boring moron" and he got the idea.

The current Leo entries with "tatsächlich" may also not be the best choice, as "effectively" means that they haven't actually been delivered, but the effect is the same as if they have been (e.g. they are on their way to the post office this very minute). Worth a "wrong entry", do you think?
