to be considered

I'm a painter; if I can be considered an artist, I don't know. A few art dealers think so.

The German expression looks like a useful addition, but I'm not sure the English suggestion really means the same thing. Based on the context given here, I would say it's more like

Ich bin Maler; ob ich es schon zum Künstler gebracht habe, weiß ich nicht.
I'm a painter, whether I've reached the level of an artist, I can't say.

vs.

After art school, he lived in a loft in New York for a few years, but he couldn't sell enough paintings to make it as an artist, so he took a job as a waiter.

That is, to me 'make it as sth.' means be financially successful, make a living at that job, which is not quite what the German seems to mean.
