"may" is old fashioned and not used nearly as often as "darf", so I suggest "can."

Ich würde, insbesondere wenn es sich um eine Unterrichtsfrage handelt, "darf ich" mit "may I" übersetzen. Auch wenn es umgangssprachlich nicht üblich sein sollte, bleibt es doch richtig.

Ich entsinne mich an ständige Ermahnung in meiner Kindheit, nicht "kann ich..", sondern "darf ich..." zu sagen, und habe das Entsprechende auch bei englischen und amerikanischen Familien beobachten dürfen.

I don't agree that it is as common as it used to be. It's not wrong to say "may I" but it is more common to say "can I". There are also a hundred other threads on LEO supporting this.
