4.4.5 Alternativen für die Einleitung von Relativsätzen des Ortes, der Zeit oder des Grundes

 
Neben den Relativpronomen that und which (+ Präposition) können – wie im Deutschen – auch Konjunktionen Relativsätze des Ortes, der Zeit oder des Grundes einleiten:
    Ort: where – Zeit: when – Grund: why
 
Besonders bei Relativsätzen der Zeit und des Grundes ist der Gebrauch der Konjunktionen üblicher als der von Relativpronomen.
Für die folgenden deutschen Beispielsätze existieren mehrere Übersetzungsmöglichkeiten, die jeweils in der Reihenfolge ihrer Geläufigkeit aufgeführt sind.
Beispiele
• The hotel we spent the night in was very expensive.
• The hotel which / that we spent the night in was very expensive.
• The hotel in which we spent the night was very expensive.
• The hotel where we spent the night was very expensive.
Das Hotel, in dem / wo wir übernachtet haben, war sehr teuer.
• I’ll never forget the month when I hitchhiked across America.
• I’ll never forget the month in which I hitchhiked across America.
• I’ll never forget the month which / that I hitchhiked across America.
• I’ll never forget the month I hitchhiked across America in.
Ich werde den Monat, in dem / als ich durch die USA getrampt bin, nie vergessen.
• What's the real reason he lost his job?
• What's the real reason that he lost his job?
• What's the real reason why he lost his job?
• What's the real reason he lost his job for?
• What's the real reason that he lost his job for?
• What's the real reason for which he lost his job?
Was ist der eigentliche Grund, dass er seinen Job verloren hat?
