Welcome to LEO’s forum!

Our forums are a place where our users can help each other out with translation suggestions and discuss language-related or cultural questions.

First and foremost:

The forums are free to use, all you need is a user login (which is also free of charge).

This user guide contains the following items:

Forum structure

Our forums are a place for our users to interact with each other. They are structured into different topics: ‘Translation queries’, ‘Language and Culture’, ‘LEO content’, ‘Comments & questions regarding LEO’ as well as ‘Entertainment’.

Jeder Bereich umfasst themenbezogene Rubriken, unter denen die zugehörigen Diskussionen zusammengefasst sind. ­Im Bereich 'Übersetzungsfragen' können fremdsprachliche Entsprechungen einzelner Wörter oder kurzer Wendungen erfragt (Rubriken 'Englisch gesucht', 'Deutsch gesucht') bzw. Kommentare zu Übersetzungsversuchen von Wendungen und einzelnen Sätzen auf den Prüfstand gestellt werden (Rubrik 'Übersetzung korrekt?').Im Bereich 'Sprache und Kultur' stehen sprachliche und grammatikalische (Rubrik 'Sprachlabor') sowie kulturelle Themen (Rubrik 'Land und Leute') im Vordergrund.Der Bereich 'LEO Wortschatz' ermöglicht die aktive Mitarbeit an den Wörterbüchern. Hier können neue Wortvorschläge (Rubrik 'Neuer Eintrag für LEO') und als falsch angesehene Wörterbucheinträge (Rubrik 'Falscher Eintrag?') eingebracht und von allen LEO-Nutzern kommentiert werden.'Kommentare und Fragen zu LEO' (Rubrik 'Betrifft LEO') sowie 'Unterhaltung' (Rubrik 'Quasselzimmer') bieten Platz für die Diskussion von Problemen aus dem Umfeld des Forumsbetriebs bzw. zum entspannten Meinungsaustausch zwischen den Forumsteilnehmern.

Die Startseite des Forums spiegelt die eingangs aufgeführte Struktur wieder und zeigt dabei die jeweils aktuellsten Diskussionen aller Rubriken an. Bei den "aktuellsten" Diskussionen handelt es sich um diejenigen, die zuletzt gestartet oder zu denen zuletzt ein Beitrag geliefert wurde. Ein Klick auf die blau angezeigten Diskussionstitel öffnet die Diskussion.

Forum sections

The forum is a place for our users to ask questions about missing translations, unknown words or phrases, usage, grammar, etc. We also welcome discussions on cultural peculiarities and intercultural matters. ­

Click the i in a circle at the top right of each forum section for more information including how to start a thread and what information to provide. ­Click the title of a forum section (e.g. Language lab) to see more threads. Threads are sorted chronologically, the thread with the most recent follow-up appears at the top of the list. ­

Navigate within a section

You can change the view according to your liking if you search for keywords, sort the results and/or apply additional filters. Browse the pages chronologically or go directly to the desired page. ­

The page numbers in the top right corner help you to navigate to previous threads.

Search the forums

You can perform a full-text search of all threads in the forums. You may restrict your search to certain sections and filter the results according to domain, grammar, region, usage). ­

Click "Search all" in the navigation bar on the left if you want to search all forum sections and enter your search term(s) in the search field. The search will return all threads that include the search term(s) (same as in the individual sections) [see Navigate within a section].

Search within a single forum section

You can easily find all relevant threads in a certain forum section and refine your search with the help of the filter function. ­

Within an individual section, you may filter search results according to your needs by clicking the filter icon (top left) and restricting your search e. g. you may only want to see results that include a certain grammatical aspect. You may also restrict your search to language related sections only and certain date ranges.

Each forum section has its own search function. Click on one of the sections and you will see a search field towards the top of the page. You may also find some useful information on ­the Search tips page ­

If you are trying to find a thread within a certain date range, click the calendar icon at the top right ­ ­ and select your dates.

View own threads

View all discussions in which you participated to keep track of your contributions

„My own threads“ in the navigation menu (bottom left) shows you all threads in which you participated.

Post a new thread

Select a suitable forum section for your question and click "Start new thread". Other LEO users can send follow-ups to reply to your question and add comments. ­

To start a new thread, click ‘Start new thread’ (bottom right) in the relevant forum section. This opens a form. All fields marked with an asterisk "*" are required fields. ­

Make your subject as concise as possible and avoid words such as ‘help’, ‘urgent’, ‘translation’ and similar.  ­

In the translation forums as well as in the sections New Entry and Wrong Entry, you may specify “Domain”, “Region”, “Grammar” and “Usage” by selecting the relevant information from the respective drop-down menus. Click “Send” (bottom right) to post the thread.Other LEO users may post a follow-up to your thread by clicking “Reply” which opens a comment field. ­

You may edit your posts for as long as a thread is not closed and nobody else posts a follow-up. ­

Registration and user profile

Set up a user profile and select your language skills. This will allow other users to better assess your contributions. ­

Um die zusätzlichen Features nutzen zu können, ist es erforderlich, sich einmalig bei LEO zu registrieren. Wählen Sie dazu in der Login-Leiste (ganz links) "Registrierung" an und füllen Sie anschließend die Pflichtfelder aus. Hierzu gehören unter anderem die Login- und Personendaten. Detaillierte Informationen zur Wahl von Login und Nick/Alias stehen Ihnen unter zur Verfügung. Aus Gründen des Spamschutzes muss abschließend noch die Buchstaben- und Ziffernkombination im angezeigten Feld eingegeben werden. Unter dem Reiter "Weitere Daten" besteht die Möglichkeit, zusätzliche persönliche Angaben einzutragen und die eigenen "Sprachkenntnisse" zu bewerten.Diese Informationen sind für andere LEO-Nutzer zugänglich und ermöglichen ihnen, Ihre Beiträge richtig einzuschätzen. Sobald Sie die Nutzungsbedingungen akzeptiert haben und die Registrierung erfolgreich war, werden die Zugangsdaten an Ihre E-Mail-Adresse versendet. Sobald Sie einloggt sind, können Sie über "Daten anzeigen/ändern" in der Login-Leiste (ganz links) Ihre Angaben ändern. ­

Get notified of replies to threads

As a registered user you can make use of the bookmark feature and subscribe to threads. When new follow-ups are posted in a bookmarked thread a notification sign (red dot) will appear next to ‘My Leo’ and in the forum navigation on the left. To bookmark a thread open it and click the bookmark symbol ­ (top right). ­You may also choose to be notified of new follow-ups by e-mail. ­To change your subscriptions go to „Bookmarks“ in the forum navigation (on the left) and you will see an overview of your bookmarked threads including an option to unsubscribe.

Private messaging

Communicate via private messaging with other registered LEO users.

The PM feature allows all registered users to exchange messages without having to disclose email addresses. If activated, all messages are sent to a personal inbox. A red dot indicates that unread messages are available. Users may opt out of the PM feature in the personal settings. ­

How to send private messages

Users with a LEO account have the option of sending private messages to other users.

If you would like to make use of this feature, you need to enable private messages in your profile.

The message symbol next to a user name ­ ­ indicates whether a user has enabled private messages. Click it to write someone a message.

To enable private messages, go to  ­My account­ .

Send and receive private messages

When you receive a new private message, a notification sign (red dot) will appear next to ‘My Leo’ and in the forum navigation on the left. ­

Messages are listed chronologically with newest messages on top and unread messages in bold. The “Sent” folder contains all sent messages (again in chronological order). Click the bin symbol ­ to delete messages.

To send someone a private message go to your inbox, click NEW MESSAGE (bottom right) and enter the nick of the recipient. Please make sure you have the correct spelling and lowercase.

The rest should be self-explanatory: enter a subject, write your message in the message field and click ‘Send’.

Suggest new entries

Help us to expand the LEO dictionaries by submitting suggestions for new entries in the New Entry section of the forums. ­

Neue Wortvorschläge werden in der Rubrik "Neuer Eintrag" als eigenständige Artikel gepostet. Bei der Erstellung eines "Neuen Artikels" erscheint eine Eingabemaske, welche zahlreiche Optionen bietet.In dem oben angezeigten roten Hinweiskasten erhalten Sie zusätzliche Informationen zum korrekten Erstellen eines neuen Wortvorschlages.Alle mit "*" markierten Felder müssen ausgefüllt werden. Mit der Maus können Sie aus den Feldern "Gebiet", "Region", "Grammatik" und "Gebrauch" die passenden Angaben auswählen und so den Beitrag weiter präzisieren. Für die Texteingabe steht zudem der Eingabehelfer zur Verfügung.Es können außerdem beliebig viele weitere verwandte Neueinträge innerhalb eines einzigen Artikels vorgeschlagen werden, indem man über "neu" zusätzliche Eingabefelder erzeugt. "Leeren" löscht den Text aus den entsprechenden Feldern; "Löschen" wiederum lässt die zusätzlichen Eingabefelder gänzlich verschwinden."Absenden" postet den Artikel schließlich im Forum, wo er auch von anderen LEO-Nutzern diskutiert werden kann. Beachten Sie bitte, dass nur Wortvorschläge in das Wörterbuch aufgenommen werden, die ausreichend belegt sind, da wir mit unserem Mini-Team nicht in der Lage sind, umfangreiche Recherchen zu Einsendungen durchzuführen.

Report mistakes in the dictionary

Zweifelhafte Einträge können dem LEO-Team gemeldet werden, indem in der Rubrik "Falscher Eintrag" eine neue Diskussion gestartet wird. Über der Eingabemaske erscheint ein roter Hinweiskasten, der zusätzliche Informationen zum korrekten Ausfüllen und zur Erstellung eines Korrekturvorschlags bietet. Alle mit "*" markierten Felder müssen ausgefüllt werden. Mit der Maus können Sie aus den Feldern "Gebiet", "Region", "Grammatik" und "Gebrauch" die passenden Angaben auswählen und so den Beitrag weiter präzisieren. Für die Texteingabe steht zudem der Eingabehelfer zur Verfügung.Es besteht außerdem die Möglichkeit, beliebig viele Korrekturvorschläge innerhalb eines Beitrages zu machen, denn über "neu" lassen sich zusätzliche Eingabefelder erzeugen. "Leeren" löscht den Text aus den entsprechenden Feldern; "Löschen" wiederum entfernt die zusätzlichen Eingabefelder. Durch das Betätigen von "Absenden" wird der Artikel im Forum gepostet, wo er auch von anderen LEO-Nutzern kommentiert werden kann.
