Sein Witz kanalisiert die Emotionen im Film und kontrastiert sehr effektvoll mit den feierlich verschnörkelten Orten, wie dem Konzerthaus in Wien...

I wanted to translate feierlich as celebrational. But verschnoerkelt means squiggly. Nothing can be celebrational aqnd squiggly except decorations at a party. Really, how can one, let alone several, great concert halls be described as verschnoerkelt?????

I can't believe feierlich can be celebrational and solemn at the same time. Anyways I thought I'd just put my head into the feeling and this is what I made. Comments? (yeah, right, it's 5 am for you guys!!!)

very strange bedfellows. Ceremonial und solemn gehen gut zusammenn aber dann celebratory? und dann, pathetic???

    komisch.

auf jeden Fall habe ich das ding so gelassen 'solemnly elaborate' und es ist schon publiziert. Ich hoffe, dass wie ich es geschrieben habe ist nicht falsch.

i always think it is best to explore a word in the native dictionary of the language. a tip i was given long ago. you cannot learn a language by translating words, but by understanding them and finding out how to use them.

a look at the translation is only a first step.

of course, this is just an opinion and it may be totally wrong.

I agree with you. I lived in Germany for five years and when I speak German, most Germans believe I am German. However, the word verschnoerkelt never came up.

Actually, you have a point: I should have seen what insight my straight German dictionary would have given me. I'm new to translating on the web. It makes it far easier-- I used to charge clients less if they stayed to help as I translated their stuff. It is wonderful to be able to ask (in German) what in gosh name they meant!!
