New Version 2013: A Brief Overview
Here's a brief summary of what has changed on our website with the launch of the new version. We have also put together some illustrated user guides for the dictionaries, forums and vocabulary trainer.
One of the main motivations behind the new version was that we wanted to reduce our page load times to make our website faster. This means page content that remains unchanged (e.g. navigation menus, advertising banners ...) only needs to be loaded once when you first access one of our services (dictionary, forums, trainer). On the dictionary pages, for example, your browser only needs to load information that is new, i.e. your new search results. This together with other improvements helped us achieve a pretty impressive Google page speed score:
... even Google is currently not faster :-) - Click to enlarge
All the same, it cannot be denied that the changeover was not all smooth sailing and also caused much frustration (from which the LEO team was not exempt).
New layout
Old search field - Click to enlargeEven if many users were not enthusiastic about the new layout at first and although we certainly do not feel like we have to follow the latest trends: it was time to give the lion a little more breathing room and bring order to the navigation which had grown a little wild over the years. Above all, however, we had run out of space at the top of the page for more dictionaries and had to find a solution which allowed us to accommodate the two new dictionaries. It seemed that once users realised that we had left the main elements in their previous place (only the search field was given a more prominent position) the complaints ebbed off fairly quickly.New interface - Click to enlarge
One-click access to audio files and conjugation/declension tables
New interface - Click to enlargeAn often received complaint about the old version was that accessing the audio files and conjugation tables required an extra click on the information icon. In the new version, these two features can be accessed directly in the results table with only one click .
In addition, we are now also offering inflection tables for German nouns and verbs, Russian adjectives and Polish and Portuguese verbs.
Two new dictionaries
Our two "newcomers": Portuguese ...... and PolishWe are very pleased to welcome two newcomers into the family: German-Portuguese and German-Polish. Many thanks are due to the kind people at Hueber Verlag who allowed us to include vocabulary from some of their titles in LEO (see also the news section in the *Portuguese* and *Polish* dictionaries). If you would like to contribute new entries for the dictionaries, we will be happy to find your suggestions in the forums. If you would like to share entire wordlists with us, please send us an *e-mail*.
