I've been putting more effort into learning Spanish these last several months, and had regretted the absence of a thread in the Spanish forum like Crossover Chat", offering people the chance to write in the language they were learning and getting corrections from native speakers. (Such a thread had indeed been started, but over time it developed into just a Spanish-language chat. I was disappointed that no-one ever went to the trouble of correcting my errors - and there's plenty to correct when I write in Spanish.)

Anyway, as Wachtelkönig said, I started a new thread: Siehe auch: La Mutualidad Trilingüe: Deutsch-English-Español (aka The Trilingual Mutual Aid Society / Der dreisprachige Verein für gegenseitige Hilfe.)

If you're learning English, you can try writing in English, and native English speakers should point out your mistakes. Similarly for Spanish. And similarly for German. That's the idea. Please come by if you're interested.

kisan, 'Goodbye Lenin' ist einer der wenigen Filme, die ich im letzten Jahr oder so (2? 3?) gesehen habe, und er hat mir auch ziemlich gut gefallen. Zum einen mag ich einfach Geschichten, die unter durchschnittlichen Leuten in anderen Ländern spielen, damit man in die Wohnungen sieht, Gespräche hört usw. 'Real life' eben, wenn auch ein bisschen hollywoodisiert.

Of course I'm serious. Well, actually it's not my fridge, but my parents' (that's bigger). It's the ideal way for them to hibernate, because they need a constantly low temperature but no frost, and a constantly high level of air humidity.

@Bommelchen - "awsome" in diesem Sinn ist wie "unglaublich!!!" - und ist seit einigen Jahren ein Modewort, für "toll" und überhaupt.

Heute hatte ich meine Bilder aufgehängt, und erfuhr, wie langsam einige Leute arbeiten können! Normalerweise brauche ich ca. eine Stunde, um die Bilder aufzuhängen, und die Dame, die die Ausstellung organisiert, war total begeistert, als wir nach 1,25 Stunden zur Hälfte fertig waren! Zugegeben wir hatten Kaffee gekocht und uns ein wenig unterhalten, aber dann gab ich Gas, und hatte die andere Hälfte in 20 Minuten aufgehängt, (als sie eine Schere und Tacker suchte ;-)).

Aber ich will nicht meckern...schließlich hat die nette Frau Interesse an ein Bild...gegen Bares :-)

Not so many news from my side, apart from Monday evening. (I gave a life report in the Zaehlzimmer but I don't think you've read it. Maybe wi-chan.)

I just had a shower and wanted to read, so I didn't bother to get dressed afterwards and just took my pyjama. I sat on my bed while still counting a bit in the Zaehlzimmer, when I heard a loud and urgent knock on my door. I just grabbed a long cardigan and went to the door intending to tell whoever was outside to wait a while while I'd put some Jeans over my pyjama. When I looked though the spy I saw two police officers. Somehow I forgot about the Jeans at that moment and just opened the door.
There have been burglars in one of the upstairs flats some time Monday. Apparently in broad daylight but fortunately nothing seems to be missing. I've been working at home half the day but I haven't heard or noticed anything during the time. A bit spooky but I guess I can call myself lucky that they didn't choose mine. But I guess the flats upstairs are more risky because less people while walks by and notice something.

The police came back yesterday and handed alarm systems out to us other tenants and smartwater pens.

Bommelchen, I'm glad he doesn't need pampers anymore, he has already learned when and where to ... (at least he gives the impression ...). You have my respect for starting to write in English after only three quarters of a year. At that time I would never have said a word to anyone except in class where the others were at the same level ...

Emily, that sounds really spooky, but I think I wouldn't notice naything either if there were burglars in the house where I live. There are only ten apartments, but there's always someone moving in or out or renovating or whatever, so every few days there's a noise as if they were tearing down the house, and I guess burglars wouldn't make any noise at all ...

It is "die Schildkröte", no matter if male or female, you also say "die männliche Schildkröte" which of course doesn't sound very logical, so I sometimes say "der Schildkröt" (my invention). So now that you've seen through me I can take him out again ;-) ... No, I swear he's in there, and it doesn't matter if there's light or not. Turtles are poikilothermic, that means their metabolism slows down to almost zero when it's cold enough, so they don't notice what's going on around them (and that's also the reason why they get so old, they perserve their life energy half of the year). And he sits in a cozy little box, burrowed under leaves and earth ...

Edit: Ok, now I'll retreat to my own cozy fridge, but just for a few hours ... Good night!

@hm--us: Is it due to the fact that I switch on my TV very rarely that I am not as easily enthralled by a film as I was when I was younger? I found "Goodbye Lenin" quite pleasant, but that's it. I liked the end when Honnecker's "successor" is delivering his speech. Although the guy always refilling jam jars and keeping his eyes peeled for Spreewaldgurken made me smile, in my opinion, the film was dragging on a bit in the middle. I had expected more.

Im allgemeinen, ja, z.B. Bücher finde ich oft jetzt weniger spannend als vor ein, zwei Jahrzehnten. Und ich lese überhaupt weniger Fiktion. Ob das eine Alterserscheinung ist?

Mich hat der Film auch nicht gerade umgehauen. That would be fine.

Though I've become more critical as for fiction I still find it easier to be enthralled by a book than by a film. When I was younger and wasn't living in the middle of nowhere I went to the movies quite often. But now I watch films on TV. I tried to watch the Mediathek Tatort, but got bored after 20 minutes. It would have been different, if it had been in English.

Today we had pretty much all sorts of precipitation (is that right? is that even a word?) over here. When I left the house this morning it was raining, directly followed by a mild form of hail. When I got out of the underground there was sleet and when I went for lunch it was snowing. On the way back home I got drenched with rain again. What a lovely day!

Just wondering: Isn't it strange that we can say "it is snowing" but not "it is sleeting"? Or can you?

I just watched "Moonstruck" on DVD and I'm really not sure what to make of it. There are so many nice little scenes and the characters, especially the parents, aunt and uncle and the granddad are just amiable. Cher looks adorable, but Nicolas Cage? Kind of weird film although I can't really put my finger on what it is. Maybe it's just the 80s.

Time for bed really although I probably won't be able to sleep cause I ate too much pasta (when will this student lifesstyle ever end?).

Even if he has been described as "Schildkrötenmännchen", I would still call him "he" (and not "it") because he has a name and is therefore treated like a sort of person. Isn't it the same in English? As soon as animals are mentioned with a name, they are called "he" or "she"?

(#31 and #35: I think one could say both, "es" or "she" when someone has a neuter nick)

Hi Goldammer, I'm not red and i must confess that I haven't read the Red Zora book but I've heard of it. When I chose my nick I assumed that people would make that connection which I don't mind at all, she seems like a cool character. So it is partly intentional. Truth is, it actually is a spelling mistake which lead to this nice association people might have.

I am sorry but I have to go back to the turtle story.
I still find this whole turtle-in-fridge thing hilarious. But even better, when I read his name and character description just a minute ago. Atalante you have made my day and I now also officially want a turtle with the attitude of an Italian. So I assume he's a little cheeky and flirtatious, though not very fast I guess?
But what I wanted to ask is, doesn't he wake up at all in his hibernation? Or do you still have to feed him every couple of weeks? Or can you just ignore him for the next few months?

@hm-us: Flourescent vs. lucid. Well I am not even sure what the correct German term would be. it's not Flourescent, because that would mean it glows in the dark or under black light. The turtel in Momo (called Kassopeia, thus female I assume) can display messages on it's shell. So the words lighten up, that's why I thought of "lucid". But of course.. now thinking about it, he indeed might be not very lucid while hibernating ;)

@ Emily: What are smartwater pens? And how will they help you prevent burglars? (I am somehow imaginging a small toy watergun...)

hm-us thanks for the corrections. It's always the verb forms! Maybe I really should start learning some grammar. But - surprisingly - I see that the corrections are far better than my choice, so somehow I know what's right and wrong.

As you have asked Zora and hm-us (and as my computer is busy which leaves me with some time):
I'm not exactly sure what a smartwater pen is, but I understand it is the same as "künstliche DNA" and I know at least how künstliche DNA works.
The pen can be used to mark a computer or TV or stuff like this as yours. It writes in invisible ink, well not invisible as it will fluoresce if exposed to black light. The fluoresce is not important, only to enable the police to find the marked spot.
There are tiny particles in the ink which are too small to be seen without a microscope and these particles are marked with a binary code which is unique for each (every?) pen. The pens are registered with the police and if they find a stolen item that is marked they can easily identify its owner, simply by using a microscope.
It comes along with several stickers to let thieves know that an item is marked (in the hope they don't take it) and with a larger sticker to put on the window (to warn burglars that the valuable stuff is marked). Experience with the system has proved that it really reduces the number of crimes committed.

There is actually a different smartwater system that works exactly like that, with a water pistol, although not a toy one. It marks a criminal at the crime scene with some sort of colour (maybe it can only be seen using black light) that can not be washed off.

Wow.. I want such a smartwater pen!!! I need it for my bike, as bikes are stolen like crazy here in London and it's always a problem to prove it's really yours if you are lucky enough to find it on one of the regular weekend markets..

Heute hatten wir eine Smartboard-Fortbildung. Smartboards sind große Touchscreentafeln, die man im Klassenzimmer benutzen kann, und es ist wirklich Wahnsinn, was man damit alles machen kann! Leider haben wir nur 15 Stück in der Schule, aber wenigstens eines meiner Klassenzimmer ist eingerichtet. Es wird aber letztendlich bedeuten, dass man den Unterricht völlig anders plant (oder überhaupt ;-)). Morgen werde ich ein freies Zimmer suchen und ein bisschen üben :-)

and yes.. I know this feeling very well. I have it regularly when I am dealing with some of my clients.

For example when someone leaves a message on my voicebox:
"Hello my name is Mr Smith *. Can you please call me back? Thank you" - click. (* random but very common name chosen)
Well, I would if Mr Smith had left a number.

2 days later, another voicebox message: "Yes hello this is Mr Smith. I called in 2 days ago and asked for someone to call me back. Can you please do so? Thank you." - click
Of course Mr Smith. I assume you are the only Mr Smith in the country and I can find only you in the national phonebook?

2 days later, another message, pretty angry voice now: "Hello. Mr Smith again. Nobody has called me back yet. Please do so. It is very important." - click.

Next day the secretary comes to my desk: "An angry German chap called for you. But he only spoke German, so I couldn't help him. His name was something like Mr Smith. You better call him back." - "Do you have his number?" - "No he didn't say, or I didn't understand."

Maybe .. this is why I turned my voicebox off .. in 2001.

While writing some user instructions .. I was critisised (c/s?:) that they would sound too childish. "I know my target group." I responded.

When I look at the time of your post, I vividly remember all those mornings when I had to get up at 5 a.m. with candison and candigirl. This went on for more than four years, and was especially hard in winter, when it was still dark outside for another two or three hours. By the time other people got up, they were already tired and crotchety (just looked up that word - Do you really say that?) again. At night, they wouldn´t sleep before 9 or 10 p.m., and I didn´t sleep through a single night for more than four years. From September to May they suffered from colds, which meant that they were feverish and grouchy and grumpy all the time and didn´t sleep more than 2 hours in a row at night.
About arguing and fighting: I can also hardly remember occasions when they really played with each other peacefully, but I do remember one typical incident. Candison (3 years) and candigirl (2 years) were sitting in the sand at a beach. There´s nothing but sand for kilometers to the left and kilometers to the right, and they are having a heated and tearful argument over a little heap of sand between them and whose sand it is.

And now all this is forgotten, but I´m still grateful that usually my alarm in the morning is the first thing that wakes me up after a good night´s sleep. :-)

Wow, Candice, theese must have been pretty rough times. I in return do get an occassional good nights sleep. Last night for example my daughter only woke up once at 11p.m. and after that I slept through until my alarm clock woke me up at 5.25 am. The reason I set it this early is for me to enjoy my morning coffee quitefully and peacefully. Just like your kids mine seem to have one cold after another, and then I might have to get up up to seven times per night. And well then I do not feel so great. But I got to go. Must pick up the girl from daycare.

Hi candice, arguing about whose thing this is, is a necessary step in 'Ich-Werdung'. I hope you then were aware already that your children were behaving totally 'phasengerecht' and you could lean back and enjoy their growth on the way of becoming adult ;-))

I'm sure that when my kids were in that phase, I wasn't thinking about such posh concepts as "Ich-Werdung" when they quarrelled endlessly about whose it was. I was only gnervt or sometimes maybe amused.
Honestly, manni, were you thinking of psychological concepts when your offspring was going through age-typical unnerving phases?
I have only lately come to develop at least some "old-age-wisdom" about enduring adolescent children, but as a young parent I couldn't be that "worldly-wise" even though I had at least some of the knowledge theoretically.

Heute klingelte mein Handy im Unterricht (Oha! Todsünde in der Schule!). Die Nummer war unterdrückt, und ich musste den Anruf sowieso wegdrücken - auch den zweiten Versuch. Könnt ihr euch mal vorstellen, wie sehr ich mich geärgert habe, als ich nach Hause kam, und mein Sohn erzählte: "Ach, da hat eine Frau eine Nachricht hinterlassen...ich habe sie leider gelöscht...aber sie wollte das XY-Bild kaufen für 500+ Euro". Ich revidiere, dass ich selten im häuslichen Bereich jemandem den Hals umdrehen möchte! Es bleibt nur zu hoffen, dass sie sich noch einmal meldet!

Ärgerlicherweise muss ich heute in die Uni fahren, weil ich ein Seminar unbedingt im Frühjahr belegen möchte, konnte mich aber nicht online anmelden. Jetzt muss ich auf gut Glück hinfahren, und hoffe, dass einige Leute nicht erscheinen, damit ich einen Platz bekomme. Eigentlich habe ich keine Zeit...psychologisch gesehen. Natürlich hätte ich mich lieber auf die Couch geschmissen, aber was sein muss, muss sein! Immerhin habe ich danach eine halbe Stunde mich umzuziehen, um dann zur Vernissage zu fahren. Reicht doch, oder?

After having read Candice' and Starlet's stories I think I'd rather have an Italian turtle than children ;)

Believe me, Starlet, even if you behave "wrongly" in hundreds of situations in your life as a parent (and I still recall some of them very vividly - first of all that I didn't insist on having older Goldammerson with me during his first few days on earth - they had taken him away from me and brought him to the children's ward because they suspected he had an infection, which he hadn't in the end...), they will grow up allright and make their way. Children can cope with a lot of crap from their parents as long as the basics - giving them love and as much support as they need - are ok.

@Jools - ich habe auch vier...und ich möchte sie nicht missen, auch wenn sie wichtige Anrufe löschen! Allerdings verstehen sie sich alle sehr gut - da bin ich sehr froh darüber. Ich habe aber vielleicht ein kurzes Gedächtnis und übe extrem viel Verdrängung ;-)

No, James is not a turtle but a sourdough. It is somewhat traditional in Germany to give sourdoughs male first names as it is "DER Sauerteig", and since I started it in England I was looking for an English name but I couldn't think of anything. Gestern war ein Heizungs- bzw. Klimaanlagewartungstechniker bei mir. Alle halben Jahre wird routinemäßig eine Wartung durchgeführt. Inzwischen ist es hier nicht mehr so warm - ist ja schließlich Herbst. In den letzten Tagen lagen die Höchsttemperaturen zwischen 10° und 15°. Was hat der Techniker dann freundlicherweise gemacht? Die Systeme auf Kühlung gestellt!!! Am Abend war es wirklich nicht so gemütlich. Zum Glück kann sogar ich das Ganze per Knopfdruck von Kühlung auf Heizung umschalten. *g*

Also die Frau hat nicht zurück gerufen, aber ich habe ihre Adresse und Nummer von der Veranstaltung bekommen, und es klebte einen roten Punkt. Es war gestern sehr schön, aber wie immer (wie bei Hochzeiten, Partys etc) hat man keine Zeit vernünftig mit irgendjemandem zu reden: Hier ein Foto, da eine Begrüßung, bitte setzt euch hin...die Musik spielt, die Ansprache etc etc. Das ist besonders ärgerlich, wenn Menschen, die man lange nicht gesehen hat, sich die Mühe gemacht hatten, zu kommen - und zu mehr Kommunikation als Bussi, Bussi kommt es nicht!
Ein skandinavischer Künstlerbekannte hat mit meiner Freundin geredet, und er erzählte ihr, er sei aus seinem Land ausgewiesen worden, weil er ein Psychopath wäre...hmmmm...die Arme, sie wusste überhaupt nicht, wie sie reagieren sollte. Er hat auch eine sehr monotone Stimme. Ich konnte mich an seine Hintergrundsgeschichte nicht mehr erinnern, aber er ist schon etwas seltsam aber sehr talentiert.

Ich hatte 20 DIN-A4 Seiten mit kleiner Schrift und muss sie in 15 Minuten zusammmen fassen - schneller Reden bringt auch nichts :-(

Heute habe ich an meine 5.Klässler gezweifelt - sie sollten 10 Zeitblöcke von der Tafel abschreiben, nachdem wir sie zusammen formuliert hatten:
8.00-8.45h: eight o'clock until quarter to nine usw
(Wir machen den Schulstundenplan)
Nach 30+ Minuten saßen einige da und hatten es gerade geschafft, die Zahlen aufzuschreiben. Ich sagte: "Lasst eine Zeile dazwischen frei". (und zeichnete es an die Tafel zur Anschauung!). Wenn ich fragte, was sie tun sollten, konnten sie es mir erklären...nur nicht ausführen! (bis auf 2 von 23!)

Zum Glück habe ich bis Mittwoch Zeit mich wieder abzuregen!

Dann wollte ich Material kopieren und bin in den 33.Stock mit dem Fahrstuhl gefahren und musste weitere 5 Stockwerke zu Fuß gehen...und der Ordner war nicht da!! Und so ähnlich ging der Tag weiter :-(

Zusammenschreiben betrifft. Radfahren heißt jetzt Rad fahren, und kennenlernen kennen lernen, aber bereithalten heißt immer noch bereithalten, und teilhaben schreibt man weiterhin teilhaben. Was soll denn das? Es ist zum Verzweifeln! Ich weiß nicht einmal, ob man nach der Reform auseinanderschreiben bzw. zusammenschreiben auseinander schreibt oder zusammenschreibt. :-(

They screwed that many things up, that I am really reluctant to adopt the very few reasonable things. They should have invested all the money that project swallowed into something more reasonable and important. Like reform of the school system, alternative energies, biodiversity research ...

Both versions are grammatically correct, but the first one appears (in my feeling) a bit confusing because the "der" could be misunderstood in the first moment as a male pronoun, and you only notice that it is a passive construction when you come to the end of the sentence.
The second version avoids that a bit, but I think I would put the whole sentence different:

Today it was quite warm again. I would really love some snow, but I don't think we will get some this winter, not after what happened at the beginning of this year (15 cm). Two years with snow are highly unusual.

Concerning "rote Zora": When I was a kid(seventies)there was a TV-series called "Die rote Zora und ihre Bande". I quite enjoyed it. Doesn't anyone else remember it? I know I watched too much TV.

When it comes to the "Rechtschreibreform" I am also quite confused. I remember seeing in a newspaper article a sentence starting: "Sie waren wohl erzogen." (That was before the reform of the reform) It was an article about well raised kids. But due to the reform the sentence to me meant something completely different.

Starlet, IMO this is no consequence of the reform, it's just wrong. If I remember correctly there is no verb "wohlerziehen" but the word "wohlerzogen" is an adjective which is one word.

There was a "Festakt" in Marbach, Schiller's birth town, today. The Schiller museum there has been restored for the last two years or so and was reopened today by Federal President Köhler who held a speech about the importance of literature and poetry in which he praised Schiller as "poet of freedom" and called him "Germany's first pop star".

Heute in dem Linguistikseminar hat uns der Dozent erzählt, Deutsche würden ein Problem haben "bet" und "bat" so auszusprechen, dass man sie als unterschiedliche Wörter erkennt. Ich persönlich verstehe das nicht - schließlich kann man "Katze" sagen. Er fragte mich, ob ich den Kindern Apple beibringen wollte. Alle lachten! Ich meinte, es wäre allemal besser als Äpple und schließlich würden ganz viele Engländer es so aussprechen - und wenigstens könnte man es verstehen (im Gegensatz zu "Äpple").

Heute früh musste ich an einem Webinar, oder wie auch immer so etwas heißt, teilnehmen. Man hängt eine Stunde lang am Telefon und muss gleichzeitig alles auf dem Bildschirm verfolgen. Es war eine Katastophe. Die Hälfte der Teilnehmer konnten nicht einloggen. Jedesmal wenn einer versucht hat, sich einzuwählen, hat es am Telefon so laut gepiepst, dass einem die Ohren weh getan haben. Die Moderatorin kannte sich mit der Technik nicht aus und wusste nicht, wie man die Teilnehmer stumm schaltet. Also habe ich mehrere private Handygespäche mitgehört. Interessant war keins davon. :-) Bis das Ganze zu Ende war, wusste ich kaum noch, worüber die Präsentation handelte.

Heute Nachmittag war auch interessant. Es kam ein Berater. Er sollte mich befragen, um Daten für ein Projekt zu sammeln. Es ist mir aufgefallen, dass er auf Notizblock und Stift verzichtete. Welche Schlüsse soll ich daraus ziehen? Meine Informationen sind überhaupt nicht wichtig? Der Berater hat ein ganz tolles Gedächtnis? Er war verwanzt? *g*

@Goldammer: Thanks for the report. So it sounds like a few celebratory events took place, but not on a massive scale.

@SD3: I'd go for the "good memory" hypotheses. How long did the gentleman talk to you? I do 45 min job interviews quite frequently, and I never take notes. As long as I write down the relevant information within a few hours after the interview, I have no trouble recalling everything in sufficient detail.

At some point in the past, I had a job with significant customer interaction, and on various occasions I would go out with an account manager to talk to a customer about technical issues. These visits would typically last for one and a half to two hours (face time with the customer). I don't recall ever taking notes, and produced my report on a visit later the same day, with plenty of details including numbers.

I wouldn't claim to have a particular good memory overall, but I find that taking notes actually _reduces_ my ability to accurately piece together what transpired later. The reason may be that it is hard to listen carefully and jot down notes at the same time.

I think it is a matter of personal style. I am doing quite a lot of interviews, too, of which I have to write reports afterwards, and I couldn't imagine doing it without taking notes. I'd claim that with my time-tested system of taking notes I can listen carefully at the same time.

It's definitely a matter of personal preference whether one takes notes or not. I never meant to imply anything else. I just wanted to point out that one can gather a lot of information without taking notes in the meeting itself, so SD3 should not be concerned that her input was for nought just because her counterpart took no written notes.

The one situation where I do need to keep notes is when I get confronted with a lot of unfamiliar information in a short amount of time. This happened a lot at the university, where some of my classes certainly resembled drinking from a firehose.

I'm a huge fan of notes and wouldn't remember half of what was on a meeting without it, while Mr. Lore hardly ever uses a pen for anything and still wouldn't forget anything. Except for birthdays, names, addresses, appointments, things to do or things to buy.... ;-)

Good morning everyone.
I went home early from work on monday and stayed at home in bed all day yesterday. Although I only feel a little bit better today I just had to go back to work, because more than one day at home drives me crazy. There is only so much TV-programme I can bear. And planning the holiday further isn't that effective, if you have to wait 16hours to get a reply for roomrate enquiries.

So now I am back in the office, at least for a couple of hours, but didn't have time to read all the latest postings here thoroughly.

But to answer some questions: The waiting is officially over. I have to work again now.

And no, I am one of the rare lucky one, whose bike has not been stolen - yet *touch wood*. But because nearly everyone I know had his/her bike stolen at least once, I am super careful. In fact I have two bikes. One really old, shabby and more or less broken one, which I turned into a single-speed and use to go to work with (although not today, because every little step makes me dizzy, not to think of real exercise). I use this one, because I need to chain it outside the building, where it has to remain all day.
The other one I have is a really really really nice and expensive custom-made (i.e. I built it myself) fixed-wheely at home, which I very much love and only use at the weekends and only when I know I am not staying anywhere or have to leave it outside. I love this bike too much that I want to take the tiniest risk of having it stolen. Hence, at home, it lives in the living-room with the other expensive bikes.

Oh and the nephew was nice. Very easy-going and no trouble at all. But he also was a typical teenager. Quite arrogant, very naive and spreading his stuff all over the place as soon as he arrived. ;) But he was a clever guy and probably in about 2 or 3 years, he'll be really cool. :)

The NOAA website predicts two more sunny days with 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Only the weekend looks very rainy. But since on American highways there doesn't seem to be much traffic that shouldn't bother too much when we will probably be driving to Michigan on Sunday.

Thanks for the correcturitos - which just seem to have changed slightly. Knew that something was wrong with the word order.
And it will be sort of a business trip, but a nice one. I actually would have taken vacation if necessary (will probably lose accumulated time anyway, especially if I will do some fieldwork on my elongated winter trip to non-winter countries). One advantage of a peculiar profession.

@ bikes and balkony - #197: Sisterheart, normally you don't put them down, you put them up - over the balustrade.
But of course you could put them down with a rope, too - abseiling as we british climbers would call this with a nice Germanism - says LEO ;-))

SD3 Good morning. As far as I know from these very few lessons that I've had so far interpunction is pretty much like we're used to it. (No clue about commas, though.)

I wrote "as-s-salamu alaykum" which simply means peace be with you and is one of the many many ways to say "Hello". I wanted to write Good morning but my computer doesn't support Arabic scripts so I had to copypaste what I was able to find. :-)

Oh yes. Abseiling is great :) Which reminds me.. I should do it again some time. Haven't been climbing for a while..

Ahh... talking about degrees and holidays. It's actually quite nice here today. Last night it was freeeeeeezing cold and raining. Most horrible of weathers. But today it's all sunny, not one cloud in the sky and the air feels fresh... well as fresh at it can be in a metropolis with heavy traffic problems ;)
But.. I have to say it again, sorry.. I can't wait to skip this grey winter for a month and spend xmas in the sun on a lovely white sandy beach :D

Just dropping by to give a life sign after having neglected my chatting activities for a while. I've got a rather special visitor round at the moment, so I'm slightly distracted ;-) He has just started to learn (learning?) German and it is beautiful to see someone making their first steps in a new language. I'm so proud.

Went to see the new Tarantino movie and absolutely loved it. I haven't been so gripped by a movie in a while and some parts of it are just hilarious while others are shocking. And the acting is remarkable.

Re Abseiling: Both the word and the activity are great I can assure you. I just don't get to do it often enough (climbing and abseiling that is). Manni, are you really a British climber? I mean, obviously you are not British, but do you go rock climbing in Britain? I'd be quite interested to hear about it although I assume your comment was a joke.

Time to get ready for a day out. The sun has actually made an appearance today :-)

In CC 215 (July 2009) novemberEuel made an appearance. Along with SD3, who mentioned that in the introduction to CC 216. And November is at least much better than December, January and February. But this opinion is subject to change. Depends all on geographic positioning.
Over here today it was sunny and one could still comfortably cycle through town with just a pullover (but a scarf was necessary).

So I will try to keep it down around 10kg... if only the scuba equipment wasn't so heavy. But I just can't stand the idea of borrowing a used snorkel and mouthpiece. *yuk* :(

@Eulchen - Hallöchen :-) Schön, dich wieder zu "sehen"...wir könnten eigentlich unser "2-Jähriges" feiern! Irgendwie kommt es mir wie eine Ewigkeit vor...erst vor kurzem haben wir darüber geredet...das war ein schönes Wochenende in Köln damals! (Ich weiß, dass wir uns in der Zwischenzeit gesehen haben, aber "das erse Mal" ist immer etwas Besonderes ;-)

Jetzt muss ich Backrezepte suchen, die meine große Tochter wohl vor zwei Jahren ausgeliehen hat! Warum ist es mein Problem, frage ich mich...die Rezepte sind die Lieblingsrezepte von meiner besten Freundin - Hefte aus einem anderen Jahrhundert und ihr ans Herz gewachsen. Ach Mist!

I am not a christmas person, neither is my family. As a matter of fact, we don't celebrate xmas and all of us really don't like the kitschy xmas atmosphere and the crazy buying-presents frenzy.
We all rather spend this time somewhere nice than at home where its grey and rainy and depressing, attending greater extended family gatherings only because we have to, not because we want to etc etc.
Every other year I joined my parents on their "tradition" to go skiing in sunny northern Italy, but I don't like the cold, can't drink as much booze as would be necessary and spending more than 5 days with my parents is just too much. So this year I am travelling through various Asian countries for a month... where it's warm, but not yet too hot and no rain season yet and which, by the way, is much much cheaper than 10days in Portugal or Greece, let alone a skiing holiday over xmas. ;)
