    spatial or spacial ?

    Comment
What is the difference between the two ?
American english / british english ?
Spatial sound more official, spacial more colloquial.
Can anyone enlighten me about the origin and the use of the two ?

    Thanks a lot,

    Markus

    according to m-w:
    Main Entry: spa·tial
    Pronunciation: 'spA-sh&l
    Function: adjective
    Etymology: Latin spatium space
: relating to, occupying, or having the character of space

    spacial: a variety of spatial

I think the difference between the two is that spatial is correct and spacial is a misspelling.
Were you perhaps thinking also of "spacious"?

according to m-w spacial is indeed a variant of spatial

The Collins English Dictionary also lists spacial as a variant of spatial, so does the Oxford Advanced. Spatial is then the prefered option and spacial an acceptable alternative.

I can not remember either reading or using spacial. It is not in my list of colloquialisms. My Webster's 3rd Unabridged list spacial as a var (var in italics). As listed there the pronunciation is identical.

Spacial: True English or British English, the correct form.

    Spatial, the US English version.

One is preferred generally in the world (the UK one), the other especially in the US.

And mainly the US, really ... .

    Hope this helps ...

    Xog.

#10: Having exhumed this old thread, perhaps you would care to cite your sources for your assertions. I am a native speaker of British English (or "True English" as you would have it), but I have never seen "spacial" used. Both the Cambridge and Oxford dictionaries cite "spacial" as a variant spelling of "spatial" - the implication being that the latter is the normally accepted spelling.

Funnily enough, a G** search gives exact the same numbers of hits for spacial or spatial resolution. Without using Goo* Scholar. We are using analytical instruments which have different "spatial resolution" for different purposes. I've never seen "spacial".

I never came across "spacial" before this thread. Entirely standard, though, AE and BE: "spacious."
