    Hi there!

I have been asked to look over a translation from English into German, done by a translation service in London. Unfortunately, our company must have used the cheapest offer because the translation leaves a lot to be desired for. I have come across the two topics:

    The top line

    and the next one is

    The bottom line.

It was translated as: Beachtenswerte Ergebnisse (The top line) and Endgültiges Ergebnis (The bottom line). I do not agree to that. I would tranlate the bottom line with: Unterm Strich, but how would one translate the top line? Any ideas out there?
    Thank you !!!

Sanda, if you provided us with the context in which those two terms are used a comment would be much easer and could be focussed.

    Top Line
A reference to sales or revenue.
This term refers to the fact that revenue is the top line appearing on a company's income statement.

    Sales and Revenue
The terms "sales" and "revenue" are interchangeable; they both refer to the gross amount of money brought in from business operations regardless of cost, liabilities, etc. This is what is known as the company's top line. It is used as a measure of the overall growth of a business.

Looks to me like "top line" = "sales" / "revenues", and "bottom line" = "earnings" / "profit"?

The translation is a report on our company's results for 2004. The top line is a paragraph which summarizes our results, turnover and acquisitions.

The bottom line, in turn, talks about our earnings, our operating margins, what we were faced with in 2004, our financial performance in general.

    Does this help?

That's how I would translate it. "Ergebnis" is the official term, not "endgültiges Ergebnis".
