Comment | In August, a German couple will be coming to stay with us for a number of weeks. Most of the questions I have about what they prefer to do should of course be directed to them, but they might be hesitant to give a forthright response, and in any case I would be interested in the reaction of anyone who would care to say what they would prefer.
One of the two speaks very good English and spent a year in a US high school in another part of the country (but has never visited the American West); the other is only minimally competent in English (even for his age, 60+) and has never visited the US. My wife speaks effectively no German; mine is pretty good.
So, my questions are, if it were you,
1) Would you like to experience stereotypical American things, like a rodeo, county fair, picnics, traditional food, etc.?
Or maybe rather normal, modern American culture (for the relevant educational and cultural demographic), including whatever food, cultural activities, etc. as is normal for the host?
Or, just have a good time, whatever?
2) How important would it be for you to explore various natural regions that are different from those you are familiar with? (different sea coast, mountains, high desert).
Or maybe more focus on city (and suburban) everyday life?
3) Which of these sounds attractive: Rodeo, white-water rafting, golf, scenic balloon ride, western horse-back trail riding, visiting volcanic or lava areas, general urban wooded or steeper mountain trail hiking (with view), opportunity to drive in a scenic area on empty highways at relatively high speed (subject to possible but unlikely police patrols), visiting an Indian reservation?
4) Side excursions (for a few days each) to several other major cities that are well worth visiting? Or some time at a seaside resort (or cottage), as opposed to day trips?
5) Eating traditional home cooking and going out for typical "American" food, versus our normal mix, including ethnic food (Indian, Mexican, Japanese, Thai, Szechuan, Italian, whatever).
A further question involves choice of language. When my wife is present (she will be working part of the time), English will presumably be the primary language, But when the three of us who speak German are together, should the presumption be English (location and vacation) or German (best common language)?
That's a lot of questions. I would be interested in comments as to any of them. |
