Novice in online chat - please help

    Comment
Oddly, I have spend 15+ years on the Internet without learning properly how to chat.

Every time I stumble into a chat room, I find people asking me questions like "what are your stats?", "how big is your ___?", "what do you like to do?", "call me", etc.

I don't object to that sort of chat, but it's not what I'm interested in most of the time.

Can anyone direct me toward "normal" chat rooms, where people talk about politics, life, literature, etc.

I guess I can figure out how to use IM, but in order to use it, I think I need to first find some "friends". I'm basically looking for a chat room to go to and hang out and find someone who's interested in this-and-that for a short time.

Either English or German would work for me.

    Any suggestions?

    Auf deutsch or English.

    Why don't you try www.zeit.de.

I have asked a friend of mine for the URL of an American political chat room - she gave it to me ages ago, but I never used it and lost it; bear with me.

Have you every tried http://www.webchat.de/ ?
It's a good address for lots of chatrooms as far as I remember - and with lots of topics to choose from. Not only the flirty ones ;-)

A lot of different platforms have their own chat function where you can "meet" people with similar interests. For example, the P2P music platform "Soulseek" has extensive chat rooms devoted to particular music genres. Or download Skype and use the search function for people in "Skype Me" mode - that means they want to chat. That does mean just chatting with one person at a time, however.

To be fair, chatting with people interested in spelling and grammar is probably one of the least 'flirty' things one can do on the internet. And it's very work-safe...

Well, I'm not exactly an "expert" either, but to my understanding there are basically 2 general concepts, for which LEO is actually a pretty good example:

    - so-called "forums" for specific subjects (language, culture, politics, etc., with more or less strict "rules",

    and

    - "chatrooms" (such as LEO's "Quasselzimmer") for anything else ...

@Skype me: Ich kann Deine Erfahrungen bestätigen.

    @10 - Don't skype me !!!!
