CD and DVD prices in Germany.

    Comment
Does anybody here know why CDs and DVDs in Germany are so expensive? I'd rather support the economy in Germany because I live here, but now buy all my music and films from Amazon UK.
I recently ordered 7 DVDs from Amazon.uk and paid €30 including postage. The cheapest of the films I bought was €10 on the German site.
Likewise CDs. I've just ordered some from the UK. One cost 8 pounds, on amazon.de €25! And I'm not talking about obscure, import-only stuff. Just compare the prices for the Beatles: most of their CDs cost almost twice as much on the German site. The first Paolo Nutini CD is another example. In my local (major chain) CD shop and on amazon.de it costs €18, amazon.uk 6 pounds.
As far as I know, there's no minimum price in Germany (as there is for books) and I can't imagine that more less people in either country download music.

    Because they can.

I noticed the same thing some time ago. PC Welt even made it a cover story and encouraged people to buy at amazon.co.uk. Anyway, I think it's cheaper because of the phenomenal exchange rate and because most English-language films are released in the UK months before they are in Germany. So often you have the German introduction price vs a UK price that has already fallen. But hey, in France they are even more expensive than here ...
Btw, ever tried play.com? Great for anything below €22. (Customs!)

They're so expensive because people here have a different attitude to paying for things in comparison with the UK - have you ever noticed there are virtually no "buy one get one free!" and other similar 'deals' here compared to England? English people have this "anything for a bargain" attitude and prefer to pay less than what a product is worth, most Germans, however, don't mind paying what they consider fair i.e. often a bit more.

Anyone who's experienced Ebay in Germany will tell you the same thing - cf. Ebay.co.uk stuff is often sold on Ebay.de for much higher prices.

I get that impression, too, UKer: British supermarkets are often just one huge "Bargain!" sign. Maybe competition is also stronger in the UK, with more supermarkets appealing to the same customer base? But even at bring-and-buy sales the prices for second-hand stuff are often a lot higher here. No books for 50p.
Play.com is cheap and has a good range, but DVDs can take up to three weeks to arrive (despite the five days they quote on their website) - amazon often sends things from the UK in just two days.

The UK is in Zone 2 just like the rest of us.

re #3: Buy one, get one free!

No, you don't need a different account. I opened my account with amazon.de and have ordered from amazon uk and usa without changing any problem. I use my credit card and don't know if direct debit would work, but I don't see why not.

That's true. Amazon is definitely faster, but Play doens't charge anything for p&p which means I can buy single items without feeling I should buy more so that it's worth the postage. Big plus, from my point of view.
Btw, I have even bought Wirtschaftswunder by Darchinger (which is trilingual) at amazon.co.uk, cheaper than here despite the postage. Vive le re-import! :-)

Direct debit does work at amazon.co.uk, but you need a British maestro card (formerly known as Switch).

    Zu amazon.co.uk

Play.com goods come from Jersey, which is not in the UK. I do get the impression that the slow delivery times are connected to this. On a couple of occasions there was some sort of customs sticker attached (can't remember what for). Once I ordered a parcel and it arrived at my home in a huge Royal Mail sack, for no particular reason. So delivery seems a bit odd!

I very often buy DVDs from amazon.de. For example, I think "Band of Brothers" was selling for US$80 in the States, but only 35,€ in Germany. Amazon.de does not charge MWSt for shipments to the US, which can offset most or all of the shipping charges.

Buying from amazon.de has at least two other advantages: I can listen in German if I want to, and since my neighbors don't have a code-free DVD player, they don't borrow my DVDs. :-)
