    to meet/make new friends

    I know that there is the expression "to make and meet new friends", but can I say the following?

    If I get the chance, I will go on an exchange. On an exhange, I will meet new friends and....

    Can I say "meet" in this context? Or do I have to use "to make friends". Or is it just optional?

    I have met thousands of people in my life but I only have a handful of friends, i.e., I have made friends with only few people (and they weren't new to me).
