Order of prepositional phrases in a sentence

    Comment
Hi, I've got a general question: I'm unsure about the order of prepositional phrases in a sentence. I know that the rule is place before time, but what about other prepositional phrases? For example:
"We went by taxi to Central Park." sounds strange to me. I'd say "We went to Central Park by taxi.
Another example: "On Friday I went with my friends to Ground Zero." I'd rather say "On Friday I went to ground zero with my friends."
My problem is that I don't really know a rule. It just doesn't sound right.

Well, in real life (i.e. in "everyday conversation") it all depends on the context - what you want to say, and which information is most important in your sentence ...

Sure there is a "rule" for English: PMT, place, manner, time. The opposite of the typical German order TMP or time, manner, place. It's not hard and fast though, since as Woody noted, it depends on where your emphasis really is.
