    Ich habe mich in letzter Zeit öfters gefragt, wie man folgendes im Englischen handhabt: dt. Größe/Gr. 36-42? Bei meinen Recherchen bin ich auf beide Möglichkeiten gestoßen "size 36-42" und "sizes 36-42". Gerade im Zusammenhang mit Schuhen bin ich ins Grübeln gekommen. Meiner Auffassung nach impliziert die Pluralversion, dass der Schuh in jeder einzelnen Größe von 36-42 erhältlich ist. (So hab ich das bisher auch bei meinen Übersetzungen gehandhabt.) Die Singularversion verstehe ich eigentlich so, dass der Schuh die Einheitsgröße 36-42 hat, so wie es beispielsweise bei Strümpfen der Fall ist. Wer kann da Licht ins Dunkeln bringen? Ist beides möglich? Danke.

    It depends on where it's written. If you see a single packet of socks and it says 'Sizes 39-41' then that means the socks fit feet which are size 39, 40 or 41. The plural there refers to the various foot sizes.

    If you are looking on Amazon and see an item marked 'Sizes 39-41' that could mean that you can buy the socks in any of those three sizes: the plural refers to the socks.

    'Size 39-41' would mean Einheitsgröße 39-41.

    'Sizes 39-41' is quite vague; it could mean either 'in Größen 39 bis 42 erhältlich' or 'Passt für Größen 39 bis 42'. If you can't guess from the context, you don't know which.

    Socks are different to shoes. If you see socks with sizes 40-44 or size 40-44 on you can be sure that they will fit people with those size feet. I have never seen, and I believe I will never see, an assortment of sock sizes in one packet which each only fit one precise size.

    For shoes, I will admit that sizes 40-44 may mean that they have all the sizes in that range. Size 40-44 will mean the same thing for me, but it is perhaps less likely that they have 40, 41, 42, 43 AND 44 in stock. I don't think you will find expandable shoes like you will with socks

    I'm dealing mostly with the translation of shoes at the moment. The article descriptions are integrated in an ERP system. The items are listed like this:
    12345 (main article)
    12345.39 (article no. for size 39)
    In the short description of the main articles you can find that information (Gr. 36-42). So in this case I am right writing "sizes 36-42" according to your explanations - thank you for your help - because it means that the shoe is available in size 36, in size 37 etc.

    Slightly OT: Does 'size 39' work in your context? Shoe/clothes sizes are often different (as I'm sure you know). Or was that just an example, but you use US/UK sizes in your text?

    It was meant to be an example. But I have to admit that I don't use US or UK sizes. As I said I'm working on the translation of ERP articles at the moment. Before that I translated the catalogue of the same company. They use the German sizes as well as German prices (euro). For customers abroad there is a size chart on one of the first catalogue pages. According to a colleague it would be too much work to adapt all products to UK or US sizes/prices etc.
