    Until just now, when doing an exercise on the British Council's website, I had never heard this phrase used before. Google returns lots of hits. However, I cannot find this phrase anywhere in dictionaries or "phrases for discussions" lists for ESL students. Is it really commonly used and synonymous with "to put it simply"? Can it be translated by "Um es einfach zu sagen" oder "im Grunde genommen" oder "vereinfacht gesagt", or what would you suggest?

    It's a synonym for "to put it simply". However, "to put it simply" is far more common.

    Good catch. I think you're right that it doesn't sound very idiomatic.

    'To put it simply' is indeed better, or 'to put it in (very / the most) basic terms.'

    Or indeed, 'basically' alone as a sentence adverb.
