    “Australia”: pronunciation

This article mainly deals with the first syllable of my home country’s name. But what I’ve noticed above all is the way that Americans, in particular, use a short vowel in the middle of the word, as if in “rally”. How have other LEOs experienced this?

Oh! I'm from the US, and I've always said (and heard) something more like "au-Stray-lia".

Californian here. I would render our pronunciation of Australia as Aw-stray-li-a. How should it be pronounced, according to Australians, either speaking Strine or "ABC Australian" (if there is such a thing)? Inquiring mind wants to know :-)

I pronounce the middle syllable like both of you, and the first syllable short and unemphasised, like the indefinite article a. To me, the end of the word is just one syllable, so I could perhaps best write it as a-STRAY-lya.

And FWIW, like most Brits I pronounce the first syllable as I would the first syllable of 'ostrich'.
