Correct form of is/are after dependent clause

    Comment
I'm trying to figure out what the correct form of "is" after the clause "the best dancer" in town is.

Example without dependent clause: "It's nice that you are joining our dance group tonight."

    Examples with clause:

It's nice that you, the best dancer in town, *is* joining our dance group tonight.

It's nice that you, the best dancer in town, *are* joining our dance group tonight.

Is there any place I can read up on this?

Es muss ganz normal "are" heißen: that you are ... (you, the best dancer in town) )

Man nennt den Teil "the best dancer in town" auch "apposition" oder "appositive noun phrase". Das ist ein Einschub, der weitere Informationen zu der eigentlich primären "noun phrase" liefert, hier "It's nice that you are joining tonight". Das Verb muss zur primären "noun phrase" passen, nicht zur Apposition.

A note on agreement: The verb agrees with the main noun, not the appositive.

Truffles (plural), a luxury food (singular), are (plural) …

Paperboy (singular), one of the nicest dogs (plural) at the pound, is (singular) …
