    traumatic vs. traumatising

    Comment
hey you competent people out there

this question regards the two words mentioned in the title.
what is the difference in medical terms?

I know a trauma is generally an injury, but if we're talking about mental health, are experiences that people go through and that may end in stress disorders traumatising or traumatic?

    thanks in advance!

    It can be both.

The death of his dog was very traumatic.
The death of his dog had a very traumatizing effect on him.

I see. but from your examples, I see that you're using the two words in a different way. i.e. you're using traumatic on its own but traumatizing in combination. was that on purpose?

if so, then I'd assume that traumatizing would be better in the following example:

It is simply a reaction that people who were put through highly stressful and emotionally traumatizing situations sometimes experience.

is that what you'd say too?
