is "ad" too informal for business letter?

Do you think it's too informal to say sth like: "We saw your ad for good X in the YZ-magazine?" in a business letter or is 'ad' OK here?

    Thanks!

In this context, "ad" is perfectly appropriate, and it is more common than "advertisement" in business letters (at least in the US).

you're fine, except you don't need a dash between the name of the magazine and the word "magazine" (dashes are most commonly used to bind adjectives before a noun in English, rather than two nouns as is commonly the case in German)
