    Etymology of "Tastatur"

    Comment

I was wondering, where the words "Tastatur" and "Tasten" come from?
These german words for "keyboard" and "keys" have become common in danish and norwegian, too, afaik, (but, strangely, not dutch) but I was wondering about the etymology of them...

Are they related to the verbs tasten/antasten/betasten, and indicating that you are touching the keys? And the -atur a fake latinate ending, or are they from some old latin verb like "Tastare" or a performer like "Tastator" originally?
