How common is the word "app" in the UK?

    Comment
Sorry for what might seem like an obvious question - living in Germany I'm out of touch with recent language use/developments in the UK.

The word "app" instead of "application" (for an iPod etc.) strikes me as rather too informal in BE for written documents, but I encounter it frequently in Germany. So perhaps it's not as informal as I think in BE? Can anyone help?

It seems to be the standard jargon for iPhones, although not for anything else AFAIK. I'm not personally very interested in gadgets, however, so maybe other people use it more widely.

For the programs distributed through the apple online store the official term is "App" or "iApp". Since "App" cannot be protected, all the other mobile companies also sarted calling their programs "apps". However I don't think it's used outside this context. At least not by the English guys I know.

It's the same in German though, isn't it? It's only used for applications for mobile devices like the iPhone.

That's exactly how I meant it - but I'm still tempted to write "application" because it sounds more formal, even when referring to the latest programs for the iPad etc.

It appears I might be out of touch though :-)

Definitely out of iPod touch ...

    Even the Beeb uses it:

Asdf, I beg to differ a wee bit: It's not the Apple Online Store but the iTunes/App Store that is selling 'apps' - the Online Store sells all kinds of Apple hardware and software and third party products but not apps for Apple's mobile devices.

    Well, so be it.

However the iTunes/App Store is a store run by Apple and business is conducted over the internet, so basically it's an Apple online store, too. ;) *scnr*

@UKer - but I'm still tempted to write "application"
