    pronunciation vegetable

    Comment
I've noticed that some of my students pronounce vegetable as veg A tah bill, meaning that they don't shorten the second syllable ("ge").

Is this some kind of German mistake? One student pointed out that his former English teacher (a German) had pronounced it like that.

that may be the BE pronunciation; it's not pronounced in AE, though: wedsch-ta-bl(s)

I'm glad I told him I would get back to him.

Could someone from Britian tell me how you pronounce it?

    I am American.

Usually with three syllables, though you could just about pronounce it with four if you were speaking extremely slowly.

    Yep.
(Strange, how did a second post get there without me doing anything?)

Merriam Webster lists both pronounciations, although the four syllable version is decidedly less common.

I think it was some guys I knew from India or Pakistan who used to pronounce it 'wedge a TAble,' with English W, English long A, and the accent misplaced. Compared to all that, saying it as four syllables instead of three isn't too bad. (-:

... Germans with little knowledge of English indeed have the tendency to 'find' known words in new ones . . .

    ... my pet hate: 'portable' pronounced as 'por-table' . . . ;-)

... and who knows how the people on the Indian sub-continent memorize the word 'vegetable' ? -

Perhaps by 'fetch a table' (to sit at and eat it) ? . . . ;-))

    Thanks for sharing.

I think I will go with "it's very uncommon so better stick with the regular pronunciation" and refer him to Merriam.

Hmm...es scheinen aber wohl beide Aussprachen richtig zu sein.

#11 Both are correct, but the four-syllable version is used when you are speaking very slowly, or when you want to stress the word "vegetable" especially, e.g. to show surprise (You saw what? A VEG-E-TAB-LE?!"). And there are certain regions (e.g. West Country) where people are more likely to say it, though I'm not aware of any region where the three-syllable version is less common.

In any case, if you use only the four-syllable version as a foreigner, combined with an accent, it will stand out more and make you sound less fluent.
