    dash, hyphen

    nineteen ought four (1904)

    Where does one put dash(es)/hyphen(s), which type and how many if any?
    I'm leaning towards figure dashes --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dash

    I'd appreciate a definitive answer, perhaps even a source, such as a style guide or similar. Thanks.

    NB. I have searched previous threads, yet found nothing specifically relevant to the above.

    In spoken BE also: nineteen-oh-four (not nought). As we don't normally write this, I'm not sure there are specific hyphenation rules for it. You would need a hyphen, though, not a dash, when joining words.

    CM2DD has hit the nail on the head. You would only writenineteen-o-four if you were reporting what someone said, or telling them how to say it. In which case it doesn't really matter how you write it. You could leave out the hyphens/dashes if you wanted to.

    Hi Escoville, schön Dich zu sehen!
    You could leave out the hyphens/dashes if you wanted to und sie durch Leerzeichen ersetzen, oder? Sonst kommt noch jemand auf die Idee und schreibt in guter deutscher Manier "nineteenofour"

    So weit ich weiß, gibt es Regeln für das Ausschreiben von Jahreszahlen, hab sie nur leider gerade nicht parat. Vielleicht hilft Google da ja ein wenig.
