    Asterix erobert Rom

mykl, I've got a staunch Presbyterian background/upbringing, though never baptised - I had myself baptised Catholic here in Germany some 30-odd years ago. SOOOO, I, too come from the "God helps those who help themselves" generation :-) Not really in the middle of nowhere, mykl - 50 km from Kassel, another 50 km from Göttingen, and we used to be a thriving "Zonenrand" region, but specialized in automotive suppliers sector. Another 50 from Eisenach or Bad Hersfeld. Added to the fact that my children and granddaughter live in this region, housing is much more affordable than elsewhere in Germany, ect. Hope I'm being half-way coherent.

Derfel, Forgot to try and answer your question. Work through a temp agency (with better-than-average conditions, as far as temp providers go), was hired as project assistant for their endeavors to establish a JV with China, including setting up a factory there to serve the Chinese market, only. Was supposed to be taken on permanently, after 6 months. They've been heavily struck by the financial crisis, lost two of their major customers, have to layoff 50% of their staff. And my boss is working on finding out just who decided to "get rid" of me, and why. He had no idea, because I'm on the international, not local payroll.

Course you are Carly, but I moved from my last town here after commuting 50 Km (one way) for 4 years, I couldn't take the hassle of the trip to and from work everyday. Not only should you weigh up the cost of the car when traveling, but the time you sit in it each month. Then again I haven't got any family living close by.

I discovered a couple of years ago that by comparing headaches, sleeplessness and other symptoms of "not feeling right" with the Biowetter that I'm Wetterfühlig. Now, when sth. doesn't seem to be in order I check the Biowetter. I've had a headache since yesterday morning, but the weather (for me in NRW) should change on thursday. The last headache (last month) lasted 6 whole days and no medication helps at all - I've tried "strong" pain killers from my Doc. It's all a little bit annoying 'cause I don't beleive in Wetterfühligkeit, but it beleives in me

I've read loads of Inet sites on the subject, but they come in two catagories, Esoteric and visit-your-local-Apothecary-with-a sack-of-money-they-may-be-able-to-help. My ex beleived in aroma therapy , bach bluten, crystal therapy, colour therapy, homeopathy, magnetism, rock salt crystal therapy (I think I've covered most of the major swindles) it cost me a small fortune (she wasn't working at the time). Despite all these beliefs and several thousand Dm my belief in a good surgeon was the cure for her problems and it didn't cost a penny. Basically I've had it up to here *holds hand above head* with Esoterics, witch doctors, faith healers and the such like.

I don't believe in crystals or anything of the kind, what I DO believe in is plant medicine (for what's oak bark if not Aspirin?) I like my herbal teas...
And some homeopathic stuff actually does work even in reptiles, although I cannot explain why (doesn't make sense, scientifically), but I would never use homeopathy without normal school medicine (so, I do give regular pain killers and on top of it, they get Traumeel)

Fortunately, my wife isn't esotheric either - I just can't help but crack jokes on that stuff.

My sister and all of her 1000 sheep believe in Homeopathy.. I don't, but.. How on Earth does she make the sheep believe in it? Think it somehow really has to work.. A cousin (around a lot of corners) of mine is into healing stones.. Well I can believe in parts of that.. Do you which stone helps against depression? A diamond. Well, that would work! Have some stones in doggies water, too.. Can't be wrong even if it doesn't help..

Good morning people, a very happy wednesday to one and all. Can't think why a diamond would against depression. but if so. has a few spare they could send them to me so that I won't be depressed. A normal "reduction" in homeopathy is 30, where you start with one drop "active" substance to 100 drops water = 1%. This 1% solution is then mixed again one drop to 100 drops of water, now we have 1% of 1%, this is repeated 30 times and the mixture is then "approx" diluted to one drop "active" substance in the sum of the oceans in the world. In other words I can put one drop of my "active" substance in th ocean by Wilhelmshafen, give the world a shake and then reap the benefits by drinking the water in Australia. Yep, sounds perfectly logical to me.

Hi Mykl, It’s all gone pear shaped and stressy ! How comes with all the bells and jingly things associated with xmas it manages to sneak up on me every year ? You would think that one would hear it coming ! We are flying back to Blighty on Mon. and I have so much to do till then that it’s no longer funny !
Carly I’m sorry to hear your news ! My wife is facing a similar problem as she has a “Brefristetvertrag” by Zeiss which has been extended twice and by law they have to either take her on or let her go in March ! Both her bosses desperately want to keep as she is involved in international sales/technical inquiries and speaks 4 languages (so is obviously an asset to the company) but as the other departments are laying people off it may well turn out that the Betriebsrat insist that they relocate a full time employee from another dept. and let here go ! Sometimes I wonder how these people work the last company she worked for was half Italian and half German and after 13 years they had to make cut backs and the Betriebsrat in their infinite wisdom decided upon a social plan redundancy system, meaning the first to go were the double income employees ! Having made my wife redundant they then realised that she was in fact the only person in the company that could actually speak Italian and then started hassling her at home to do the translation work for them (it would have been a lot cheaper to keep her on as we ripped them off for the translations something stupid to get even).
Luckily being an optimistic couple we are in the belief that these things are sent to try us and with a bit of luck something good will come of it ! I hope that you find something soon and in the immortal words of someone I can’t remember the name of “Don’t let the bastards get you down “

Good on yer Vf, hit the buggers where it hurts - in the wallet. As far as I know there is no cure for stupidity so these things will continue to happen. I was helping the church here last sunday by running a stall of "hand crafts" on the christmas market. One "gentleman" asked the price of a wooden reindeer wall coat rack, well, a wooden sheep that kids could hangtheir coats on if you know what I mean.(Egal) Anyway, I told him 12 Euros (there was a sticker on the back) he flipped out, cursing all and sundry at the high prices ! of sth. that is "just" hand made, he left. About 20 minutes later he came back, his daughter still wanted the wooden reindeer so he asked if there was anything I could do about the price, so I did. I cossed out the 12 and wrote 20, and that I told him (quietly) was for behaving like a trottel. He STILL bought the wooden coat rack, 'cause his little darlin' was crying wanna, wanna ,wanna, gimme, gimme, gimme....

VF, I HEAR you about your wife and their stupidity!!! I "only" speak three languages, and this company has already asked whether I could free-lance for them. In the past, I've translated for at least half the local companies, have had several request that I get in touch, should I set up business. I've had a "Gewerbeshein" for years, have a "Marklücke" here in the region and contacts galore. If one's application for "Existenzgründung" is approved by the Arbeitsamt, that would entitle me to 9 months of my former unemployment benefits, PLUS 300 euros a month for health insurance, PLUS you can then apply for a further 6 months -
Gotta get some work done :-)

Well while we are on the subject !

A guy walks in to a crowded bar, the only seat free is on a table by the window occupied by a very sad looking man , not finding anywhere else to sit the guy asks if the seat is free and sits down. After 10 mins of silence he finally asks the sad guy what the matter is ? The man points out of the window and say´s “Do you see that house over there” ? I built that with my own hands ! But do you think they call me Dave the builder ? No ! He continues “Do you see the wonderful garden the house has”? I planted every plant and tree with me own hands ! But do you think they call me Dave the gardener ? No! Again he continues “Do you see that beautiful old-timer in the driveway there”? I restored that from scrap with my own hands ! And do you think they call me Dave the mechanic ? No ! But you shag one sheep !!!

I can see Mykl putting on his wellies as I write ! ;-)

A guy moves out into the Australian outback as a farm hand, on arriving he notices that the whole town is male. What do you do for entertainment here he asks, the barman answers we use sheep. The farm hand is horryfied and goes back to work. After a week he asks the same of one of his coworkers and gets the same answer, unhappyly he goes back to work. After a month one evening after a few "tinnies" he says right lads I'm going to do it and leaves the bar. An hour later he comes back with a sheep in tow to the horror of the others in the bar. The barman calls him a dirty swine, the preacher sighs "how could you" and the others in the bar turn their backs on him. He blows his top "you hypocritical bastards you all do it and now that I have you pretend to be annoyed".
"We are annoyed" answers the bar keeper, "that's the sherrifs gal"

You couldn't know Vf, that this isn't the first time that sheep/yorkshire/mykl have been the topic of conversation and I've used that joke in self irony.

    Artgerechte Haltung von Männern
Auszug aus dem Bundesgesetzblatt für Deutschland
ausgegeben am 19. Juni 1998 Teil 1. III.

Außerdem sollte man ihn möglichst einmal

And so long as I've got time to play with google - one for Isi.

    Kalorienregeln

Well, I'm pretty much done for today..Desk is tidy, work done so far, data saved..
For those I won't see any more, I leave some wishes:

Have a wonderful Christmas time without stress and annoying relatives, with time to enjoy the presents or just some time to sleep late and spend with friends..
Easy: I imagine it will be hard for you this Christmas, but whatever else there might be to say..They are better of now..
I hope the new year will bring all of us the success, happiness and healthiness we need.
I think there were definitely better years in (my) life than 2008, so I hope the 2009 will be better in most cases..

Don't know if I'll find the time to "pop in" again, so I'm leaving a huge pile of hugs and kisses next to the wishes (mykl, yes, you will have to share!!)..

And last but not least..some lyrics from one of my favorite country bands:

    Rascall Flats: My Wish

Nah, but my last buy was 5 years ago, and back then it really hurt to spend the money (was a student then), however it was a necessity. Now, it's still a bunch of money, but it doesn't hurt so much anymore as I have a regular income PLUS the notebook isn't so much a necessity anymore, but about 50% for fun. :o)

Thanks for your sympathy, Emil! Haven't gotten a new one, yet - thought I'd "make do" by buying a "Filteraufsatz" and making it the old-fashioned way (had TOO many last-minute things to get done before Christmas)...sooooo bought filter thingy, got home and the dang thing is of much smaller diameter than is pot. So, selbst ist die Frau, placed a noodle sieve over pot, placed filter thingy into noodle sieve, brewed coffee, and then poured into thermos - silly me, could have placed filter onto thermos :-) Guess my brain is running on overload with unexpected unemployment and all the Amtswegen added to my agenda right before Christmas.

Tree still hasn't been delivered, I don't know HOW I'm going to get all 3.50m of it up the stairs, sun came out long enough to light up some dust I had missed :-)) OH WELL, went to pick up my Woodstock tickets at the Kulturinitiativ and am "hired" to do free-lance interpreting when our French partner delegation shows up (plus do correspondence)...so, first step on my way to being independently employed. I did have to explain that AE is NOT a foreign language, nor do I have any trouble understanding BE :-)

I spent 3 years of my life trying to get my qualifications as a technician/Meister recognised by thhe German Government. It started off with we need the lesson plans (from 18 years before), so I got them. Then they wanted all my individual exam results, so I got them and politly pointed out that my lesson plan was more detailed and in more depth than the German qualification plus a basic pass (note 4 ) was 65% and not the laughable 40 % here (I had straight ones [90%+]- apart from magnetism (4) *hangs head in shame* In fact my training was at an equivalent level to Ingeneur here, but in the end they just said no and refused to give any reasons, 'cause as their letter said "they didn't have to". I couldn't work at my trade anymore anyhow, I've been out of it now for far too long.

For some reason, my Internet provider lost the server and I just now got reconnected - Merry Christmas to all!

mykl, I hear you!! "They" are soooo regulated on the one hand, and on the other you need NO qualifications to open a driver's ed or Heilpratiker apart from being German, 21, and a 6-week to 6-month "schooling." A Dipl. Psychologe canNOT get a KV-Zugang - or only under extreme conditions, whereas any Dr. Med can take a few months psychology, get KV-Zugang - you have to then tell him/her your troubles, and he/she refers you to a real psychologist - nutty :.-))

I can only blame myself!!

Bye mykl, Emil, Igelin & Co. !!

Had been looking forward to New Year's Eve party at my son's home, but can't make it - which on the other hand is not at all a bad thing, as my children decided it's time Mommy had a new cat in her life, and gave me the sweeetesssst little kitty cat for Christmas, including all the trimmings (cat box, bed, ect.)!!! Pitch black, except for a white ruff on her breast, an estimated 4-months old, somebody just tossed her out I guess, and she'd been in the Tierheim since mid-November.

Hope to see you all again on Friday, at the latest :-)

grabbingupsomehugsandkisses - leaving my own, minus kisses, so no one can blame me for catching flu...

Mornin' Wari, who couldn't get used to it.It's just the small problem of finding someone or sth. to finance it that the most of us have. I think I've lost my sense of humour somewhere 'cause I've just finished reading Making Money from Pratchet and I didn't laugh out loud once - most unusual.

Good Afternoon. All! Birthday went by me as if I were in a daze, but unfortunately, I "woke up" this morning to the realization that I am in fact, 54 years old :-)) OMG! Oh well, as the old saying goes, you're only as old as you feel - yesterday I felt about 90 and today in my late 30s early 40s :-) I'd be happy to have a job to go back to on Monday, but am now bound and determined to make it on my own....

Had to slide down "my mountain" today - Streudienst only hit the main road - how's things snow-wise in your areas??

Hi Carly, I would imagine it's a little bit frightening at the moment, like the first solo piloting an aircraft or your first tight rope walk without a safety net. I cant really imagine it myself as I've always been too much of a coward to want to be self employed. Bound you may feel, but in Germany no one starves or is homeless unless they want to be, there is always a safety net should it be required at some level or other. No snow here, it's far too wet for that due to the rain *gg* So, I'm off, had I not forgotten to turn off Leo from one of the other computers I would have "missed you". Have a super weekend Carly and I'll see you next week (probably)

Well mykl, Glad you forgot to turn off LEO :-)) Nothing brave about me in view of self-employment - I just have no other option, right now, unless you call HarzIV an option - yeah, I'd be entitled to about 30 square meters living space, could be sent off to work for 30 hours a week at 1 euro per hour, or sent off to work at amazon's factory, or or or...I've shied away from it for years, because I like the security of a monthly pay check and free-lancing as a side line...now there's no pay check to be found within the next 4 months, given the current economic situation.

Moin Wari, serves you right for being a snow lover. The stuff should stay on mountains and picture postcards of mountains, not where normal people live and try to function. This isn't Siberia or the Alps and we just ain't kitted out for this sort of thing. I can't use the cycle paths 'cause they havent been creared and even the main roads aren't really suitable for two traffic flows and poor lottle me and other bike users are risking life and limb just trying to get from A to B *heul*

It's not my (or other snowlovers) fault that most parts of Germany fall into chaos when there's more than 5cm of snow.. I guess my friends in Alaska would laugh out loud if they heard that the A2 was closed due to snowfall.. Same goes for Northern Europeans.. But here, everybody panics and no one is kitted adequately.. What's the problem with clearing main roads and cycle paths? It's not like there's half a meter of new snow each morning.. *grumble* *startsscratchingagain*

Agree with Wari 100% - apart from the amount of snow needed to plunge some German cities into chaos. Usually, it's 0.005 centimeters of snow that do the trick. *rolleyes*

Anyway - good mornin' folks. Looked up the prizes for the Nintendo and Doc Kawasaki yesterday and I must say it thoroughly repelled me from the thought of getting one. For that amount of money, I get tons of books and magazines that help with training your mental abilities.

"T-Shirt-only-temperature" (as I in the meantime have come to know the eater-outers a bit: of course there IS supposed to be other clothing below waistline along with the t-shirt) starts at 21-23°C. Every degree above that is an unnecessary waste and leads to unalluring transpiration.

Honi soit qui mal y pense is the motto of the English chivalric Order of the Garter. Its literal translation from Old French is "Shame be to him who thinks evil of it"

Don't have problems like that with E mail. The only things that arrive by snail mail are bills and they can stay there until it gets warmer.

Sunny here, and only -15°C - must be the global warming hunkering down in Nordhessen :-)) Front page news: "Eisschollen an der Werra" - guess we get icebergs next...funny thing, though - we have next-to-nothing on snow, BUT I am NOT complaining!! Loved snow when all's it meant was to get off school and go sledding :-))

Poor mykl, only postmen are supposed to brave this weather on a bicycle!!!
