    Liebe Leute,

    Dear host family,

first we would like to thank you for giving our son Andreas the chance to live with your family.
With this commitment you give him the opportunity to make his dream of spending a year as an exchange student in the US come true. We appreciate that and we are sure that you won’t regret hosting him in the upcoming school year.

Andreas is a friendly and helpful open minded individual with distinct social skills. He is sportive and engaged in issues which he is interested in.

After school he comes home for lunch, takes a little break and meets his friends before he starting his homeworks. Aside he supports his mother with the housekeeping but - like all boys in the age – not voluntarely. But don't hesitate to ask for his help, he won't hide and will help.
His bedroom he cleans up without any order.

As the leader of a Christian youth group he takes care for weekly meetings for about six children aged 10 and 11 years.

In school he was elected being class representative as well as student speaker.

Andreas spends his leisure times with his brother Sebastian, who is one year older and is doing an apprenticeship as a systems mechanic since two years. They go skating, play basketball and visit their friends. In wintertime they take every opportunity to go to the mountains for skiing and snowboarding. In summer they like sailing with their father on his boat, which is lying on the Ammersee, a lake south of Munich.

Beneath his interests and school's mandatories Andreas loves music. In the age of ten he had have piano lessons for three years. Two years ago he has rediscovered his interest in music and takes guitar lessons since that time.

We hope this letter gives you a first impression of Andreas and his life in Germany.

Please feel free to ask if there is anything you would like to know about our family

    Best wishes

It's a nice letter and I hope your son will have a good year.

    Here's a start:

Andreas is a friendly and helpful, open-minded individual with distinct (?well-developed) social skills. He is athletic and engaged in issues which interest him.

After school he comes home for lunch, takes a little break and meets his friends before (he) starting his homework (no -s). In addition, he helps his mother with the housekeeping but - like all boys his age – not voluntarily. But don't hesitate to ask for his help, he won't hide and will help. He cleans up his bedroom without being told.

In some places it sounds a little stiff/formal; here are some suggestions...

    with distinct social skills.
--> who gets on very well with everyone

he is sportive --> he loves sports

engaged in issues which he is interested in.
--> and has lots of keen interests

Beneath his interests and school's mandatories --> As well as his interests and the work he has to do for school

After the "Dear X", in English the letter always starts with a capital: "First we..."

Ich denke der Brief ist völlig sympathisch und verständlich. Perfektionssorgen würde ich mir erst machen, wenn ein Brief in besserem Deutsch zurückkommt.

I wouldn't worry too much about little mistakes either, but overly formal language might reinforce the stereotype that Germans are serious and dull!
