There's actually also a fairly recent new version of 'Upstairs, Downstairs' that's set something like 30 years after the original one. It was on last season or the season before and in the US ran more or less at the same time as 'Downton Abbey.' Jean what's-her-name who was a maid or whatever in the original makes a cameo appearance as the retired housekeeper.

Period dramas currently running on PBS here (is it sweeps by any chance?), probably somewhat after the UK, include 'Call the Midwife,' which I enjoy a lot even though it can get very sentimental; 'The Bletchley Circle,' which is pretty good but has aired somewhat irregularly; and 'Mr. Selfridge,' which is not objectively all that good (the leading man is wooden and there are linguistic anachronisms), but still entertaining and watchable, with nice sets and costumes and bits of historical background detail.

There's a thread somewhere on recommendations of British costume dramas, miniseries, etc.; anyone who can get the search to work could maybe link to it.

Ich weiß nicht wie ihr das seht, aber es tut mir im Magen weh, wenn Downton Abbey in Deutschland auf Deutsch läuft. (Bei uns Läuft D.A. im Original mit Untertiteln). Da geht eine ganze Menge von der Atmosphäre verloren! Falls jemand die englische Version lieber anschauen möchte, kann ich Onlinetvrecorder empfehlen. Dort kann man nicht nur jede deutsche Fernsehsendung aufnehmen und dann ansehen, sondern auch andere Sender in Europa und USA. Es kostet relativ wenig und man hat die Auswahl unter Sender aus mehreren Ländern, wie:

@CARIOCA: Stand by! Downton Abbey Series 4 starts this autumn.

Kann mir mal jemand erklären, was an Downton Abbey (außer Maggie Smith) so toll sein soll? Ich habe von der ersten Staffel knapp zwei Folgen geschaut (danach ging die DVD kaputt) und nicht das Bedürfnis gehabt, mehr davon zu sehen - ich fand es sterbenslangweilig.

Was daran so toll ist? Das kann man jemandem, der es nicht mag, nicht beschreiben. Entweder man findet etwas schön oder eben nicht. Das kann man an keiner bestimmten Sache festmachen. Mich hat es auch sofort an "Das Haus am Eaton Place" erinnert. Und ich mag es eben romantisch-tragisch *lach* Naja, Downton Abbey mag sogar mein Freund und der ist so gaaar nicht romantisch veranlagt.

Dass die Übersetzung einiges zu wünschen übrig lässt, habe ich allerdings bereits am Anfang gemerkt: Da wurde aus der armen "Dowager Duchess" die Herzogin von Dowager *prust*

Vielleicht sollte ich es mir auf englisch auf DVD leisten, die einzelnen Staffeln kosten nur ca. 10 Euro.

Von "Das Haus am Eaton Place" gab's vor ca. zwei Jahren oder so ein paar neue Folgen ... die werden hin und wieder (Feiertage) beim WDR wiederholt ...

Wenn man die Serie mag, lohnt sich die Originalversion schon allein wegen Maggie Smith, denke ich.


Über den in #6 empfohlenen OnlineTVRecorder habe ich übrigens sehr Unterschiedliches gehört, inklusive Trojaner, die auf diesem Wege auf den Rechner kamen ...

Die Trojaner wird man sich über OTR selber wohl nicht einfangen. Aber wer unbedingt auf "umsonst" aus ist, und Werbung klickt, um Punkte für Dekodierungen zu sammeln, kann sich über die externen Werbeseiten, auf die man weitergeleitet wird, wohl mal was einfangen... Darum habe ich fast von Anfang an für die Nutzung bezahlt (und die 60 ct pro Monat machen einen ja nicht gerade arm).

Ich habe mir die Staffeln gekauft - weil sie einfach soooo schön sind, und ich sie der Atmosphäre halber mit Sicherheit häufiger sehen werde. Habe gerade am Wochenende die dritte Staffel zuende gesehen und Rotz und Wasser geheult.

Wer Pride and Prejudice mag, der mag auch Downton Abbey, behaupte ich jetzt mal. Herausragende Pluspunkte: die liebevolle Zeichnung aller Charaktere, sowohl der Lords und Ladies wie auch der Bediensteten (und allem was dazwischen ist, Ärzte etc.) Die Handlung ist manchmal etwas zäh, aber in der Zwischenzeit kann man sich an der üppigen Ausstattung delektieren... Wie heißt das so schön? Scenery Porn...

George Clooney Just Gave 'Downton Abbey' Fans A Fantastic Holiday Present

Not even the most stoic of British people are immune of George Clooney's charisma.
After months of waiting, Clooney made his dashing debut on Downton Abbey — sort of. The actor appeared in a sketch for a ITV's Text Santa charity telethon that imagined an alternative universe if Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) never existed. Instead, Lord Hollywood, aka Clooney, ruled instead.
In a nod to It's a Wonderful Life, the nine-minute skit is a tongue-in-cheek parody of the stuffy show. It features all of your Downton favorites dissolving into pandemonium without Lord Grantham's stern hand.

It's not surprising that the estate is completely enamoured with Hollywood royalty. But no one was more hooked than the dowager countess (Maggie Smith), who fell off the couch and rolled on the floor after receiving a kiss from Clooney. We feel you, girl.

Ja ich fand das im Text schon ungewöhnlich, aber mein Englisch ist so eingerostet, dass ich es nicht wagte, an der Richtigkeit zu zweifeln! Präpositionen sind sowieso das Schwierigste in Englisch.
