Comment		More Olympics observation ... I was astonished to see this Shakespearean word appear not once, but multiple times, in the Guardian live blog. Was that just one dingbat who managed to save a glaring error to the spell-check program for the entire newspaper, or is that spelling or pronunciation by any chance still used in some BE dialect? (Not that I actually think the Guardian has any human beings checking spelling, since there were at least two mentions of 'skulls' (sic) in the context of rowing. /-; ) ____________________ While the blue riband women’s All-Around event continues in the gymnastics arena, I’ll [be] keeping a close eye on the women’s singles tables tennis gold medal game ... Comment		'riband' - nie gehört. Der Klang und die Schreibweise erinnerte mich aber gleich an (dt.): das Ripsband. ... Ripsband ist ein dünnes aber auch starkes Dekoband mit einer fein gerippten Oberfläche, das sich eignet für unzählige Anwendungen. Ripsbänder werden verwendet als Saumabschluss, als Befestigungsschlaufen und Griffe, zum Basteln und Dekorieren. Auch als Geschenkband wird das beliebte Textilband gerne verwendet.

Comment		War das Blaue Band = Blue Riband nicht eine informelle Auszeichnung für das schnellste Passagierschiff, das den Atlantik überquerte? Lang ist es her, aber ich glaube, dass sich die Metapher davon ableitet.

Comment		Damit nicht auch andere Unwissende nachschauen müssen: Der Begriff aus dem Rudern, der auf Deutsch mit "Skull" durchaus richtig geschrieben ist, heißt auf Englisch "scull".

Comment		Blue riband is a well-established set phrase, even if "riband" has otherwise fallen out of use. If they'd written "blue ribbon", I'd have been quite annoyed at the Americanism :) blue riband 2. a. the most distinguished achievement in any field b. (as modifier) the blue-riband event of the meeting Blue riband definition and meaning \| Collins English Dictionary (collinsdictionary.com) Edit: It's also the name of a brand of chocolate biscuit that's been around for decades. So auch Regel 24 (Bootsklassen) der Rules of Racing and Related Bye-Laws des Weltruderverbands FISA https://worldrowing.com/technical/rules/2021-... Michael Jones (Guide to Henley Regatta & Reach) beschreibt „Rowing“ so: „Rowing is Britain’s oldest team sport. *Rowers* propel a *boat* with one *oar* each. *Scullers* have a *scull* in each hand. Rowing is occasionally referred to as sweep-oared rowing...“ (emphasis in original)
