Was sagen die native speakers?

Ein leises Unbehagen bleibt also ...

Instantly = at once, directly and immediately.
Instantaneously = (of two events that occur) so nearly simultaneously that any difference is imperceptible.
-- Bryan Garner, A Dictionary of Modern American Usage (1998)

Of course, that's the prescriptive version; the descriptive version, as reported by dictionaries, is that many people do indeed use them interchangeably. I'm not sure I would have been able to explain the difference myself, but now that I read it, it makes sense.

@Rotznase: BTW, would you be at all interested in commenting on whether 'hit one's straps' is AusE, and if so, where the 'straps' part comes from?

    "instantaneously does not exist!!!"

Don't trust the mob! Research your fact! Please refer to the Oxford Dictionary, and I advise against using any Online-Dictionary, including Leo..

@DA: My dictionary of preference is the Random House (Webster's) Unabridged and, yes, it does contain "instantaneously."

If this Oxford dictionary you refer to does not contain "instantaneously," that would be just one more reason for me to stick with my Random House.

Mea Culpa, the new version of Oxford does contain "instantaneously". I guess they also follow the mob, something I will start to do as well, instantaneously ...
