Schüleraustausch: Letter to my host family

    Comment
    Hallo

    Dear host family,

First I want to thank you for making this exchange possible. For me, this is a big dream becoming true.

I live in D. where I was born in 19.. . D. has a population of about ?? people and is the capital of ??, one of the smaller states in Germany bordering to ?? and ??.

My brother F. is two years older than me. We go to the same school to which we walk every morning in about 20 minutes. The school emphasises scientific subjects. I have 4 hours of physics a week and I like physics very much. I also study two foreign languages, French and English.

My parents are both ??. My mother is a school teacher and my father teaches computer science at D. University. We live in a house surrounded by a large garden and have two cats, Nora and Jaloux. Our house is just 3 kilometers away from the city center so I can meet my friends there easily. It is also close to the ?? border.

With my father G. and my brother F. I often go running. This summer, the entire family ran a half marathon (21,1 km) with 3000 participants together. During summer, we often ride the bicycle. When we visit my grandmother who lives close to ??, we sometimes take a canoe trip on the Rhine River. My father and my uncle used to do a lot of canoeing when they were young.

Of course, we like to go to cinema and sometimes, we go to the opera to see a play at the theatre. But some days, all the family has to work in our big garden, too.

My mother G. comes from a big family with 3 sons and three daughters and my father G. has three brothers. Therefore, I have 14 cousins altogether. At least once a year there is a big family reunion. Usually, it is at my grandparent’s farm in H. which is between S. and N. . These family meetings are always exiting since there are so many people of different ages and backgrounds. I like to be with my family because I always find an open ear when I want to talk about something.

In my free time, I like to do sports. I often play soccer or basketball with my friends. There is a gymnasium close to where we live where we can do that very well and we go there quite often. I also played handball for several years. Since the age of seven, I’m playing the violin. My teacher is M., a professional musician and a friend of the family.

I also enjoy working with computers. My father, as already mentioned, teaches computer science and I have learned from him how to write programs. For example I wrote a program that is able to solve the Sudoku puzzle. Because my parents are both at work during the day and there is no lunch served at school in Germany, my brother and I often cook when we return from school. By now we really enjoy cooking and I even bought a cooking book.

After graduating from high school I plan to study a subject like mathematics, physics or computer science at a good university. I think I like these subjects so much because I’m very interested in understanding how complex things work for example electronic devices like a computer and I am good at solving logical problems. If there is anything I don’t understand I will try everything to find out how it work and if there is a problem I can’t solve I will work on it until I find a solution. Therefore I would like to become a scientist after studying at university and try to understand as many things as possible so I will develop new ideas or even invent new things.

Living in a foreign country and a new family for one year is a great opportunity I’m looking forward to. I think it will help me to better understand other cultures and be more open-minded for new people.

    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    I'll do the first bit:

    Dear host family,

First I want to thank you for making this exchange possible. For me, this is a big dream come true.

I live in D. where I was born in 19.. . D. has a population of about ?? and is the capital of ??, one of the smaller states in Germany bordering on ?? and ??.

Don't make it too perfect though, it is supposed to reflect you and your personality after all.

I agree, it doesn't have to be perfect - there's no reason to pretend that your English is that of a native speaker.

One suggested change, reflecting US usage:
"we like to go to cinema" -> "we like to go to the movies"

For the ending of the letter, "Sincerely yours" would be perfectly fine, if perhaps a little stilted. "Best regards" is another possibility.
