    Snow in Chicagoland

    Comment
Don't you guys love it? :) we have 7" so far and it is supposed to keep snowing until 8pm tonight.

But I guess that is nothing compared to the few feet they have over in northern New York! They actually climb up on their roofs from the snow. I've just seen pictures where the snow reaches their gutters.

@Helmi --- I haven't seen the film, but still don't see what you are up to. Global warming does not contradict regional and temporal cold and snow. It is winter after all. And there is evidence that overall temperature rise leads to more extreme weather phenomena, like this goddamned blizzard over here.

Chicago is my favorite American city. My haunt was Kedzie: falafel, Lebanese sweets and buying spices by the pound at the arab markets.

My first and last encounter with Chicago and snow was arriving back in the States from Germany - my car was in long term parking, which is a gigantic lot. So imagine upon my arrival finding over 1 meter of snow covering all cars... I spent a good hour digging down to reveal the color of hundreds of cars. It gets worse... when I finally did find my car it had a flat and when I finally managed to get the tire changed all the highways had been shut down and remained closed for an additional 2 days.

But have fun Pete - it's great if you don't have to travel.

Here in Mainz am Rhein we're already having April weather.

In a recent House hearing on global warming one scientist confirmed that in New Zeeland methane produced by the millions of sheep is a bigger factor wrt green house gases than is CO2. However, for the vast majority of industrialized countries that is not so. The same scientist also mentioned that New Zeeland is trying to address the issue of animal methane by adjusting the feed. As holger points out, global warming is consistent with certain places getting colder (such as the center of Antartica).

@Holger, I am not denying global warming and I know it is a fact! The average temp here in Chicago has been higher in the past few years. We had around 110 degrees fahrenheit in July's. However, this winter it dropped down to -34 degrees fahrenheit but the average temp still being higher than usual.

@KellySue, how can you talk about Chicago food without even mentioning the deep dish pizza and our chicago style hot dogs? :P
Hopefully next time you are visiting Chicagoland you won't have to spend your days digging out your car! I know that's what I will be doing in 2 hours...

I'm in Kansas, we have about 1 inch and everybody is talking about it. Today, a woman asked me how I as a foreigner would cope with this cold weather and a professor apologized for the snow.
I really love just to hear people talk and see how these biiiiig strooooong look-at-me-trucks struggle to move on. The only one I met who is not at all impressed (guys, it is snowing for the third time this winter!) is a friend from North Dakota.

    @ Pete[Chicago]:

Sorry Pete for the omission of deep dish pizza and chicago style hot dogs. I could go on for pages about how fantastic Chicago is, ahh the shoe shops on State... except for that one time, I brought a group of German exchange students downtown (we were at the old water tower that serves as tourist info) and some guy jumps out of his car with a semi-automatic weapon and shoots a cab driver. The German students, of course, thought it was the coolest thing they'd ever seen, something "typical" American they could talk about back home. All I could see were lawsuits from the parents - but thank goodness Germans differ from Americans when it comes to this.

    @ judex:

Bitte spuck nicht auf uns! ;-) Are you in Wiesbaden? I've noticed around this time of the year (5. Jahreszeit) there are two types of people: those who go on holiday to get as far away as possible to avoid the sheer stupidity of Fassenacht and those revel in the permission to be wild. Any thoughts?

    Re: global warming

It is my sincere conviction that my ex-boyfriend is single-handedly responsible for global warming... the hairs in my nose have yet to grow back.

The same is true for the Cologne carneval. Twenty five years ago this inspired the BAP song 'Nit för Kooche'.

Ok, I admit I had to google "eepsch Seit"... you must be from the right side of the Rhein ;-) Ingelheim, Bingen?

    @ Norbert:

I'm not sure if I'll get around to attempting to understand Koelsch in my lifetime... I've managed Hochdeutsch fairly well, and can come pretty far with Rheinhessisch, but I'm afraid Google will have to be my friend in this case.

Oh a sensitive and hotly debated issue, which side of the Rhein is the "eepsch Seit"... I've lived on both sides, but I'll hold my tongue... each side has its unique flavor and advantages.

I'm outside on my balcony, can you see me waving? :-)))

Do you know the restaurant "Tannenburg"?

    @ Pete [Chicago]:

What about the Chicago River? Is there a better side? Or a rivalry between people who live on one side or the other?

"Nit för Kooche" [phonetic spelling of Cologne dialect] --> "Nicht für Kuchen", i.e. "Selbst wenn Du mir Kuchen geben würdest [bliebe ich Karneval nicht hier]". If I recall correctly, the liner notes for BAP records always glossed the most difficult dialect words. Since I have relatives from the Rhineland I understand most of the Cologne dialect pretty well.

The group's official website (http://www.bap.de) has the complete lyrics for this song (and many others) including a translation into "Hochdeutsch". Apparently the spelling used by BAP is "Nit für Kooche".

We have a similar concept in Frankfurt called "hibbdebach" and "dribbdebach" ('de Bach' being the river Main).
Just that we're not having a dispute about it: "hibbdebach" is the old part of the town and the city center and "dribbdebach" is Sachsenhausen.
