    ich war schwimmen

    Comment
I know that you can say "ich war schwimmen" to say "ich bin schwimmen gegangen", but don't know how appropriate it is in different contexts. Is it just familiar (or is it wrong even then, the kind of thing you should avoid), or can it be used in higher registers too? (I assume it wouldn't work for a business letter, but besides that, I am not sure where the line is).

I haven't thought about it really before, but I'd now say that "Ich war schwimmen" is somewhat more informal than "Ich bin schwimmen gegangen". Yet I'd say you can use either in any context... Well, if you want to be dead sure (say in a really formal context), use "Ich bin schwimmen gegangen."

Ich meine, es ist (fast) immer korrekt. Man sagt ja auch -durchaus förmlich- "wir waren mit Geschäftsfreunden essen", " ich war einkaufen". Läßt sich IMO aber nicht verallgemeinern.
