Möglich ist höchstens das Du dir einen Deiner "alten" Texte nimmst und dort mal Word die Wörter zählen lässt, aber 1200 Wörter sind ja nicht gleich 1200 Wörter und daher gibt es wohl keine adäquate Formel mit der Du die gemeinten 1200 Wörter auf Deine Berechnungsbasis von 55 Anschlägen/Zeile umrechnen kannst!

Alternative ist eine Schätzung, was aber wohl aufgrund der Frage deinerseits nicht im Sinne des Erfinders steht!

Wäre es angemessen, von ca. 7 Wörtern pro Zeile auszugehen, sprich 1200 Wörter wären dann ca. 170 Zeilen? Word scheint von 6,5 Wörtern pro Zeile auszugehen, wenn man die Zahlen vergleicht.

If you`re working with Word in the options list there is a word counter.

7 englische bzw. 6 deutsche Worte pro Zeile erscheinen mir fair.

@ Lara - Click on the word count panel in Word and you will see two totals for the number of characters. One of the totals includes spaces (Leerzeichen) and the other is excluding spaces. Take the with spaces total and divide by 55, being the number of keystrokes per standard line.

Back in the dark ages, when word-processing hadn't been invented, the firm I worked for calculated 9 words per line for a 55-character line. The nominal word length for typing speed tests was (is?) 6 strokes. 9x6=54 - which is near enough to 55.

There's a free tool called FeeWizard that I have found extremely useful for this kind of situation and worse (e.g. customer suddenly asks you to change from charging per target word to charging per source line, etc.).

@ mykl and steve - thanks, as an experienced translator I am aware of that ;-) My problem was being given an advance heads-up about an upcoming translation that will be 1200 words (+ 22 PPT charts with 100 words each) and having to give a quote sight unseen. Hence the problem...if they'd given me characters (or lines), it would have been easy enough...but words "don't come easy to me" LOL.
