    wie klingt dieses Wort für einen native speaker?

    positiv? eher negativ? verrückt, spritzig, verspielt oder eher anstrengend, nervig ?

    Schließe mich odondon an. Für mich ähnlich besetzt wie im Deutschen "putzig": etwas altmodisch, harmlos-nett, auf keinen Fall anstrengend oder nervig.
    Außerdem erinnert es mich an die Figürchen, die ich als Kind in meinem Setzkasten hatte: Whimsies from Wade. Kennt die noch eine/r der Briten hier?

    @Dragon - that brings back memories - until I googled for the term, it meant nothing to me, but the pictures immediately brought back memories - my mother used to collect them ,and we'd all gather around to see what new one she'd managed to garner!

    @odondon: Mine are still somewhere in my parents' house. I only had maybe five or ten of them, though - I suppose I grew out of them eventually, or maybe it was that I discovered that there were even better things to waste my pocket money on :o)

    Achtung, dies ist ein Uraltfaden!


    Mir ist whimsey in diesem Guardian-Artikel zu einer Ausstellungseröffnung über den Weg gelaufen:

    In folgendem Ausschnitt kommt whimsy vor:


    Lubaina Himid’s exhibition in the museum’s Blavatnik Building, where time and performance-based art usually rule, is full of the kind of jolly postmodernist pop you usually see at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The vibe this museum projects is heavy and apocalyptic, in keeping with its daunting industrial scale. But this artist is all whimsy. She starts her retrospective with a set of paintings about DIY.


    Und jetzt rätsele ich, ob die hier im Faden vorgeschlagenen Übersetzungen, die in die Richtung putzig, altmodisch, ... gehen, hier wirklich passen und gemeint sind. Könnte schon passen, aber ich bin nicht sicher. Was meint Ihr?


    PS: Nachdem ich den gesamten Artikel gelesen habe, bin ich jetzt recht sicher, dass sowas wie altmodisch oder verstaubt tatsächlich gemeint ist. Da war ich mit meiner Frage mal wieder zu voreilig. Allerdings ist das whimsy hier schon negativ (zumindest in Richtung langweilig) gemeint oder? Das würde #1 und #3 etwas widersprechen.

    Note that "whimsy" is a noun -- most responses here are treating it as if it were an adjective.

    #18 Das hatte ich mich gestern auch gefragt und dann habe ich festgestellt, dass die meisten Wörterbücher whimsy nur als Substantiv führen, andere aber auch behaupten, dass es whimsy auch als Adjektiv gibt und dass es eine Alternativform für whimsical ist.


    In meinem Link ist es aber wohl ein Substantiv, denn in Konstruktionen wie "He is all ..." folgt meistens ein Substantiv oder? Beispiel "She is all talk.", "He is all smile." Wenn man das übersetzen will, wird man aber im Deutschen oft auf ein Adjektiv oder ein Verb zurückgreifen. Zumindest fällt mir keine passende deutsche Konstruktion mit einem Substantiv ein.

    In this review Jonathan Jones is complaining that the artist's work is quite jolly, colourful and idiosyncratic, but lacks profundity or any strong emotion (e.g. rage).


    For the meaning of "whimsy" -- which is not covered at all adequately by putzig or altmodisch -- it's best to consult monolingual dictionaries, by searching for "whimsy meaning".
