Fora oder Foren (im Wahrig steht's)

Im Englischen wird nur dann der lateinische Plural verwendet, wenn tatsächlich ein alter Marktplatz gemeint ist (so der PONS).

Laut The New Oxford Dictionary of English gilt der Plural 'forums' für allgemeine Begegnungsstätten (wie etwa die Foren von LEO), der Plural 'fora' jedoch für Marktplätze antiker römischer Städte.

In den USA scheint sich der Plural 'fora' allerdings auch für Foren im abstakten Sinne durchzusetzen... Ich würde die EU jedenfalls eher als ein plurilaterales Verhandlungsforum sehen und nicht so sehr als "antiken römischen Marktplatz"...

@Anja: vielleicht haben die die google übersetzung genommen, da wird es nämlich auch gerne aus den Deutschen Foren in fora übersetzt.

The plural form "fora" is often used when the meaning is "(any) place to discuss things" (rather than a particular place actually called a forum such as here).

So I might distinguish between
"There are a number of forums for linguistic issues on the Internet: Leo for instance." and
"Scientists can present their work in a number of fora.".

There may be some AE/BE difference, and/or differences in personal taste. I don't think I've ever noticed 'fora' at all in any context. My impression is that the people who would use it, even in restricted senses like that, would be likely to be in a rather small minority, perhaps largely made up of classicists or traditionalists.

I don't think you can go wrong if you just use 'forums.'

I agree with hm--us. "Forums" is absolutely standard in AE.

English dictionaries show the plural of "forum" as either "forums" or "fora". (For example, see http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/forum ). But personally, I don't think I've ever seen the word "fora" in any normal context (except in dictionaries).

I agree with all of ##11 and 12 and I suspect there isn't actually a BE vs. AE difference on this (at least not in contemporary BE). Some, if not all, of the current LEO entries with "fora" are possibly misleading.
