    Denglish.

    Denglisch, sometimes spelled Denglish, (also Gerglish or Angleutsch) is a portmanteau of the words Deutsch and English. Used in all German-speaking countries, Denglisch describes an influx of English, or pseudo-English vocabulary into the German language through travel and English's widespread usage in advertising and business. While some feel that this influx, similar to the import of Latin and French words in the past, makes the language more expressive, in many sectors of society it remains controversial, notably with older generations who are often less accustomed to English terms. Such English-influenced use of language is often found in incompletely-translated US-American or English products: The German version of Microsoft Windows XP will inform the user of the fact that it is currently downloading updates with the words: Updates werden gedownloadet: 16%. Another phenomenon is the usage of the English genitive (possessive) construction 's , often called Deppenapostroph (Idiot's apostrophe or Idiot's inverted comma), instead of the appropriate German constructions. For example, a Denglisch speaker might write Wikipedia's Aussehen (Wikipedia's design) instead of either Wikipedias Aussehen, or das Aussehen der Wikipedia. It is notable that some companies such as Deutsche Bank now do much of their business in English. The popular German a capella group Wise Guys produced a song on their Radio album called "Denglish", a tongue-in-cheek look at the use of English words in German language. In this song the lyrics start out mostly German with only a few English words creeping in, It progresses to most of the lyrics being English: "Oh Lord, please gib mir meine Language back.

    Thank you, mykl..for this wonderful new thread..

    May I introduce to our kind readers the Jacuzzi (including three of our female members)
    sheep, cows and crocs (well, the've grown a bit since..) and the wonderful money-tree? Not to mention the garden, turning colorful once more do to the season..

    We are usually nice people, though mykl has been described differently from time to time..

    We chat about this and that and WE MEET! On November 1st somewhere in Unna.. We'll publish more detailed info as IT DRAWS NEARER!

    I decided a while ago that this is going to be my last job, whether the job lasts to my retirement or not. If the job goes I'll play the system as far as I can (after my allowed 18 month unemployment), 'cause there's no way I'm going to work for 6 Euros an hour for some money grabbing Leih firma. I don't think there will be any jobs here after 2014, it's become noticeable that they're only investing in the "anlage", in things that they can sell, we haven't had any new workers signing on in the last 5 years although we need people - all we get are people for 6 months at a time.

    Shucks, I got here too late to wish you a nice ride home, mykl. Not quite sure how old you are (about my age), but should you already be 55, then you get two years. Found out that they are going to start laying people off, and that there's another legal option, apart from a "Sozialplan" - companies can layoff according to age groups, so they are going to start with the "elderly" who have reached the great age of 48 - supposedly because at about that age, production workers "es mit dem Rücken zu tun bekommen" - what's the world coming to??

    Morning to All from a very foggy Eschwege! Yep, Baujahr 1955 here - my small claim to fame is that I am the New Year's Baby for both Germany and the US - born two minutes after midnight :-))) That makes me the eldest here in this Leoland home thread :-)

    Well, mykl, since young mothers still ask me how old my daughter is, when I'm out with my granddaughter, then I guess I'm holding up rather well :-) Though, I do need a bit of de-graying every now and then (like right now, but will have to wait until after our Unna-Treff :-))

    "uncle" and "aunt" are awful, anyway..
    Due to my parents Altersunterschied, my cousins are a lot older than me and quite near to my Mom.. And she hates it when they call her "Tante"..but they like doing so and teasing her.. :)
    But she managed to make my nieces not call her Oma -what she actually isn't, she's just married to Opa :) sounds complicated, but isn't..

    I just ignore the bunch of them until they ask something of michael. It's probably quite hard for them as well. I only turn up every couple of years, the family gets a little larger and I'm a little less well known to some of them.

    Thanks for the nice new thread, but that's about the only decent and polite thing I'll be able to say for the next hour or so until I've calmed down.
    Friend of mine kindly borrowed me her laptop and I've been trying to get uni-internet access for about ninety minutes now, but have failed anyway.
    REALLY pissed off already. On top of that I'll have to translate my friends summary of her doctoral thesis today, since she needs it by tomorrow morning (I might need some help...). And I'll probably be kicked from this computer later on, that's why I was desperate to get the laptop to work, and now it's not working and I've wasted hours that I don't have today, my doctoral thesis is still hidden away in the recesses of my mind, meaning: I'm still not working properly on it, and it's not even as if I was GETTING anything for this translation, since it's a friend, apart from experience...
    GRRRRRRRRRRRr
    And ON TOP OF ALL THAT... I'm starviung :(

    We eat as adults (generally) what we ate as children. A (Russian) workmate here was brought up on what the family had - an orchard. He eats at least 2 kilos of fruit a day, we had less fruit in the 50s than the DDR in the 70s, but I know about 20 recipes with potatoes, cabbages and onions.

    mykl, They've been saying that ALL "summer" - guess they think we're too stupid to remember those couple of weeks we had in April. I recently asked my mother how much they might be bribing weather forecasters to constantly tell us how warm it is (as we sit there debating on whether we should turn the heat on, or suffer frost bite).

    mykl, That creep Sarazin stated that not too long ago when oil sky-rocketed. Merkel had said "NO" to taking back some of their multiple energy taxes to alleviate our burden, commenting with "Sie sollen Alternativ-Quellen verwenden" ha ha, as if we had any alternatives. On the one day, Sarazin "instructed" the poor on how they could eat a balanced diet on ONE EURO per day/per head, and the next "put your sweaters on." Isn't it funny how they have NO money to give us back some of our taxes, but when their "ach so klugen" idiotic bank executive board transfer 300 million to a bankrupt US bank - who rushes in to help with OUR money??

    Sorry, Isi, but it does rile me - and when I start thinking about the matter, I recall their answer to "Massenentlassungen" when it was at its height in 2004 - Massenentlassungen = Massenabfindungen und wir zeigen unsere Anteil in dem wir unsere Teil nehmen - which amounted to 13,000 Euros the govt. took from me, when I lost my job.

    Which brings me to another very SORE point - in 2005, I earned an extra 1960 euros free-lancing, to finance my second apartment. The state took 776 euros for themselves, despite my having to "afford" two apartments before getting fired.
    And have I ever mentioned that the last temporary home-from-home I lived in in Karlsruhe was an "Altenwohnheim" LOL ! Yep, Granny was THE spring chicken for 8 whole months :-)

    ROFL - that's a good one (the label on the coffee machine)! Although the secretary in the company where I used to work during school holidays (a long, looong time ago) was a lousy coffee chef. You didn't even have to hold the pot up to the light to see through it. The others were always glad when I was around to make the coffee. :-)

    Well, mykl, I slightly disagree with this statement. I did read the books (twice, in fact) and Derfel didn't exactly come across as a womanizer. In fact, he rather seems to be a bit clumsy and shy - or perhaps the author of the mentioned excerpt doesn't mean romanically involved. ;-) There are several woman Derfel does cross paths with, though.

    And you got the "Overwhelmingly Large Telescope" here? Wow - I'm stunned! ;-)

    Derfel: No offense taken.. The Warlord Chronicles? Have they been translated into German yet? I read some of Cornwell, but he's not my favorite author. I prefer a little less historische Korrektheit and a little more feelings. (I read some of his Saxon stories)..

    But we should fit together as Derfel is described as "straight-forward and gifted warrior who is loyal and trustworthy", which is something said about the Waringhams, too. Only problem will be mykl, who's a Yorkist..We Waringhams are Lancastrians..

    AFAIK the Warlord Chronicles haven't been translated. Only the first part, "The Winter King", seems to have been recently made available at Amazon.de as "Die Artus-Chroniken 1 : Der Winterkönig" The other two don't seem to have been translated yet. I read them in the original both times, as I try to improve my English this way and like to read what the author originally intended to say, even if I don't always get everything.

    I very much like Cornwell's style of writing, especially the Warlord Chronicles. The Copperhead Series was fine, too. I have shied away from Sharpe so far, though, because there are - what, 20 or 22 - of them? And I know, if I like the first one, I will want to have them all, which will tear a huge hole in my budget ;-)

    It took me some effort of will already to hop onto the Discworl train at "Feet of Clay" and purchase every other book that was published before that. It's easier to keep up then to catch up :o)

    Ah *penny drops* Carly, is it usual in AE to speak out "/" as slash ? I watched Bush doing a speech this morning, he's still suffering from foot and mouth disease, (every time he opens his mouth he puts his foot in it). He was praising some ice hockey team for sth. hr said "not only are the team great, but their wives slash girlfriends..." It conjured up a luvvery picture of several hockey mums armed to the teeth with their kitchen knives attacking the girlfiends of those not married.

    That one was called Wawa... and it's gone to a good home, but I MISS it!!! Very intelligent that one. We had just wanted to start target-training it, when some family said they would like to take it. So we suggested that they do target-trraining.

    I think it's amazing how fast and suddenly the snake reacts.. I mean, I'm not afraid of snakes, but I have a lot of respect.. We met a poisonous one in Australia (easy, I can look up which one, if you'd like to know..think it was the 12th most poisonous or sth)..anyway, the tour leader became very fast.. :)

    Wari, I'd be interested :-)) I once HEARD a rattlesnake, but didn't stick around to find out where he was coming/rattling from :-) Other than that, I had several encounters with http://www.wf.net/~snake/moccasin.htm when we lived in the suburbs of St. Louis and had a nearby woods/swamp to "play in" - the swamp was fully equipped with everything that attracts children, frogs, bullfrogs, crawdads, crickets, tadpoles, black widow spiders - in other words "child's paradise" :-))

    Zeit daran zu erinnern, dass es von den Doors (über die wir hier ja auch schon einmal diskutiert haben) ein Stück 'Celebration of the Lizard' gibt.

    Aber eigentlich hatte mich "semiprofessional" auf eine uralte Geschichte im
    Zeitmagazin (?) gebracht. Die berichteten über einen Typen, der, wenn ich mich recht erinnere, eine Imbißbude vor dem (alten) Wembleystadion hatte und wiederum Jahrzehnte zuvor als möglicher Schlagzeuger bei den Roling Stones im Gespräch gewesen war. Er wollte/konnte zu der Zeit aber nicht und habe dann einen "Halbprofi" empfohlen (der bis heute Schlagzeuger bei den Stones ist). Ich kann kein Stones-Stück mehr hören ohne "Halbprofi" zu denken.

    Lots of things like that happen in life. People like to use the words fate or schiksal, but I don't believe in fate (I think we've discussed this at some point), fate would rob you of your free choice/will, 'cause it wouldn't matter what course of action you took, fate would predominate.

    I went back to school at age 36, first got my "Fremdsprachenkorrespondentin" and then took the two-year Dolmetscher/Übersetzer course. One of our American teachers was a most (in-)obvious alcoholic. She was originally from Michigan, told me that some guy I constantly asked her out for a date, sought out her company, ect., but she didn't want to have anything to do with the "ugly rat-faced looking guy."     But would we change something if we knew in which direction we'd go? Would we really decide differently? Or is it better not to know what will happen, 'cos we couldn't oversee all the consequences?

    I read sth about a book (Making History by Stephen Fry), where a young history student writes his doctoral thesis on the early life of Adolf Hitler and his mother. Per time machine he goes back to Braunau and give Hitlers father a permanent male contraceptive pill.. And then history changes.. but not for the better.. read more..

    Good morning everybody! An with good I mean as in "great, half of my face hurts, it's freezing cold, my project that's going to be delivered to our customer today ain't finished yet, a potentionally unpleasant vist to a baby surgeon with my six-week old boy is on the agenda, too, AND I'm feeling a cold coming on". But apart from that - "Das Leben ist eine großartige Sache!" :-)

    As I wrote before that, yes, it's freezin' cold. However, you're right - as long as it's dry (or at least snow instead of rain and hail) I'm fine aswell.

    Morning, easy.

    Na, none of the above - I seem to have heavily bitten into my lower lip last week, and the wound became inflamed a bit. Actually it had gotten better already, but yesterday night I unintentionally tore off the scab (being pretty clumsy) and that hurt - no it seems to be radiating pain some way up and down, and I think I won a visit to the doctor later today.

    And yes, I am male - why do you ask? (being nosy myself) ;-)

    Popping in and out - wavehitoall - freezing cold here, too, had a glimpse of the sun, but it disappeared again behind ominious looking clouds. Am looking forward to a weekend trip to the Taunus region, Mommy's 77th bday today, party tomorrow.

    One can have christian beliefs without being a christian. My moral and "lifes" standards are very old fashioned - having been brought up for the most part by my grandparents - a lot of people would say that these are similar to christian beliefs, apart from the fact that I don't believe or maybe better said I'm not yet convinced.
