suffixed with / by - Which preposition is correct

    Comment
Hi,I want to express that an artificial word (a Java class) is suffixed with / by another word ("Hello" suffixed with / by "World" results in "HelloWorld").And generally, what is the difference using "with" or "by" together with "suffix".Thanks,Lars

    1) to be suffixed with (= to be suffixed in company with/in accordance with X)

    2) to be suffixed by (to be suffixed by means of/through X)

I think in my context I can use both, but perhaps "suffixed by" would be more convenient because I didn't ask to suffix... :D.

    Am I right?

    Please post your context!

I have a Java code generator. I tell the generator the name of a ruel, i.e. "HideProperty" and it generates two Java classes: "HidePropertyRule" and "HidePropertyWrapper".

And now I am describing this situation:
"... the generator creates a class for every designed rule suffixed with 'Rule' ..."

the name of a rule, of course.

I hope to have understood your context correctly because I am not that familiar with computerlinguistics. Otherwise, if I have not, then please feel free to post once more in German:

the Java code generator classifies every generated rule adding a suffix of its name to it

Der Generator erzeugt für jede Regel eine Klasse und hängt an den Namen der Regel "Rule" an (Name der Regel: HideProperty; Name der Klasse: "HidePropertyRule").

What you told me would be the other way round?

I would say "suffixed with something" and "suffixed by adding something."

    Then how about:

the generator classifies every rule as HidePropertyRule, which means that Rule is added as a suffix to the rule name of HideProperty.

    Then how about:

After generating a rule, the generator classifies every one as HidePropertyRule, which means that Rule is added as a suffix to the rule name of HideProperty.

When generating a rule, the generator also classifies every one as HidePropertyRule, which means that Rule is added as a suffix to the rule name of HideProperty.

Thank you both for your suggestions.

@Noam: If my text was that concrete, I would use your suggestion. But it is only the behaviour of the generator in principle I have to describe. I would have to write something like this:

the generator creates a class for every rule and adds "Rule" as a suffix to the name of the rule.

But I think suffixed with / by sounds better, doesn't it?

    ----
By the way: I think classify is the wrong term here because a class is computer science specific. Think about a class as a definition of certain objects.
Example: With a class called "Tree" you can create different trees: an oak (Eiche), a beech (Buche), and so on. Additionally the class "Tree" defines certain properties of a tree: leaf shape (Blattform), bark of a tree (Baumrinde), and so on.
And my generator really creates these classes/programs.

the generator creates a class for every rule and names it by adding "Rule" as a suffix to the name of the rule.

    @Lars: Oh, I see...

But anyway, my contributions were at least somewhat helpful, weren't they?

Yes they were, thank you very much.
